PART 3 – The House They Could Never Go Back To
The eviction notice revealed everything.
Three weeks earlier...
Their mother, Laura Bennett, had lost her apartment after months of unpaid rent.
She had worked two jobs.
Skipped meals.
Sold nearly everything she owned.
But it still wasn't enough.
The final notice gave her twenty-four hours to leave.
Neighbors later told investigators she had spent that last night packing only two backpacks.
One for each child.
Inside the second backpack, Detective Rachel Collins found a letter.
Its edges were worn from being folded over and over.
My sweet Noah and Emma...
If someone finds you before I do, please believe I never wanted to let you go.
Rachel's hands trembled.
The letter explained that Laura had gone to a nearby town searching for seasonal farm work.
Before leaving, she kissed both children and pointed toward the old county road.
"Stay together."
"Keep walking toward Miller's Church."
"If I don't come back before sunset... someone there will help you."
But the children misunderstood.
They thought their mother wanted them to keep walking until they found her.
Instead of waiting...
They had walked for three days.
Twenty-two miles.
Alone.
Barefoot.
Hungry.
Holding hands the entire time.
The room fell silent.
Then another officer rushed in carrying new information.
Laura Bennett had been admitted to County General Hospital...
After collapsing from exhaustion the very same day she left home.
She had remained unconscious ever since.

She had no idea...
Her children had spent three days searching for her.
