"Unfortunate Lives" Part Four
They Walked for Three Days After the Eviction... Because Mom Promised She'd Be Waiting at the End of the Road.
For three endless days...
A five-year-old boy walked down an empty country road with his little sister holding tightly onto his hand.
Their tiny shoes were torn.
Their clothes were covered in dust.
The little girl kept asking the same heartbreaking question.
"Are we almost there?"
The boy forced a smile.
"Almost."
Because that's exactly what their mother had whispered before strangers forced them out of their tiny apartment.
"Keep walking down this road."
"I'll find you before you get to the end."
So they walked.
Morning after morning.
Night after night.
Whenever his sister cried from hunger, the little boy broke his last piece of bread in half...
Pretending he wasn't hungry himself.
Then, on the third afternoon, a passing truck finally stopped.
The driver rolled down his window...
But what the exhausted little boy said next made the grown man burst into tears.
"Please don't take us somewhere else..."
"...Mom knows to find us on this road."

PART 2 – "Mom Said to Keep Walking."
The truck driver introduced himself as Jack Morgan.
He had spent thirty years delivering groceries across the state.
He had seen abandoned pets.
Broken-down cars.
Families sleeping under bridges.
But never two children wandering alone down a deserted highway.
Jack climbed out slowly, afraid of frightening them.
"Buddy," he asked gently, "where are your parents?"
The little boy tightened his grip on his sister's tiny hand.
"My mommy is waiting."
"Where?"
"At the end of the road."
Jack looked ahead.
There was nothing.
Only miles of empty pavement disappearing into the horizon.
"How long have you been walking?"
The little boy counted on his fingers.
"I think..."
"...three mornings."
His little sister tugged on his shirt.
"I'm hungry."
The boy immediately reached into his pocket.
He pulled out half of a stale dinner roll.
It was the last food they had.
Without hesitation, he broke it again and handed the larger piece to his sister.
"You eat first."
"What about you?" Jack asked.
The boy smiled weakly.
"I'm the big brother."
"Big brothers don't get hungry."
Jack had to turn away.
His eyes filled with tears.
He offered them sandwiches and bottles of water.
The little girl began eating immediately.
But the boy wrapped half of his sandwich in a napkin.
Jack frowned.
"Why save it?"
The little boy looked down the endless road.
"In case Mommy hasn't eaten either."
Jack immediately contacted the sheriff's office.
Within minutes, deputies arrived.
