Part 8: The final shadow revealed!

Part 8: The final shadow revealed!
The glowing screen of Sarah’s phone felt like a block of ice against her fingertips.
[Victor was just a pawn, Sarah. The real master of the Syndicate expects your full surrender by sunrise... or your mother won't survive her night shift at the hospital.]
Sarah’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted around the roaring atrium—the flashing press cameras, the fleeing corrupt board members, the federal agents leading a snarling Victor Vance out in handcuffs. None of it mattered anymore.
"Arthur!" Sarah shouted, her voice cutting through the chaotic noise of the hall. "We need to get to St. Jude’s Hospital right now!"
Arthur Sterling hurried over, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Ms. Montgomery, what’s wrong? Victor is in federal custody! We’ve won!"
"Victor was just the front man!" Sarah hissed, shoving her phone into his hands as she bolted toward the exit. "They’re at the hospital right now. They’re targeting my mother!"
Arthur’s face drained of color as he read the text message. "Dear God..."
Rain slashed against the windshield as Sarah’s black SUV tore through the city streets at extreme speeds, running red lights with police escorts clearing the path ahead. Every second felt like a cruel countdown.
Mom, please hold on, Sarah pleaded silently, her knuckles white as she gripped the steering wheel. I lost Dad to a coma tonight... I won't lose you too.
Ten minutes later, the vehicle skidded to a halt in front of St. Jude’s Emergency entrance.
Sarah didn't wait for her security detail. She slammed the door open, sprinted through the double doors, and charged up the emergency stairs to the ICU floor.
The corridor leading to Richard’s room was eerily quiet. The bright fluorescent lights flickered softly.
As Sarah rounded the corner, her heart stopped.
The six private security guards she had stationed outside the ICU room were lying unconscious on the floor, their communication earpieces ripped away.
The heavy glass doors to Richard’s ICU suite were propped wide open.
"Mom!" Sarah screamed, bursting into the room.
Inside, Eleanor was pinned against the far wall, a heavy-set man in black tactical gear holding a thick hand over her mouth. Standing beside Richard’s hospital bed was a woman in a crisp, pristine white medical coat, holding a syringe filled with clear fluid right over Richard’s IV line.
The woman slowly turned around.
She pulled off her medical mask and dark-rimmed glasses, letting a cold, elegant smile spread across her red lips.
Sarah froze in absolute shock. "Evelyn?"
It was Evelyn Vance—Mark’s mother, the woman who had acted like a shallow, arrogant socialite at the engagement party just hours ago.
The fake, petty mother-in-law routine had been a complete lie.
"Surprise, Sarah darling," Evelyn purred, her voice devoid of any warmth or weakness. She casually tapped the syringe with her manicured fingernail. "Did you really think Victor was the mastermind of Vanguard Holdings? My foolish brother-in-law was nothing more than an loud-mouthed errand boy."
"You..." Sarah stammered, stepping forward carefully, her eyes locked on the syringe inches from her father's chest. "You're the head of the Syndicate?"
"I built Vanguard Holdings thirty years ago while Richard was building Montgomery Global," Evelyn said calmly, her eyes cold as flint. "While your father played the honorable businessman, I controlled the shadow networks of international shipping. The only thing standing between me and total dominance of the Eastern ports was your father's stubborn refusal to sign the merger."
Eleanor whimpered under the henchman's grip, tears streaming down her face.
"Release my mother, Evelyn," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet frequency. "You have the board. You have the press. It’s over."
"It's only over when I say it is, child," Evelyn sneered. "Victor failed because he was impatient. Mark failed because he was a foolish boy blinded by a cheap assistant. But I don't fail. You are going to sign the port transfer deeds over to Vanguard Holdings right now, or I press this plunger and deliver five hundred milligrams of potassium chloride directly into your father's heart."
"If you kill him, you get nothing!" Sarah countered, taking a subtle half-step closer. "The trust lock activates immediately upon his death! The deeds become legally frozen for ten years!"
Evelyn paused, her eyes narrowing. For a fraction of a second, hesitation flickered across her face.
That fraction of a second was all Sarah needed.
BANG!
The glass window of the ICU room shattered inward as a high-powered stun grenade burst through from the hallway ceiling.
Blinding white light and a deafening shockwave exploded through the room. The henchman holding Eleanor stumbled back, clutching his eyes in agony.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She lunged forward like a panther, grabbing Evelyn’s wrist and twisting it upward. The syringe flew from Evelyn’s hand, shattering against the tiled floor.
"You arrogant bitch!" Evelyn shrieked, clawing at Sarah’s face.
Sarah sidestepped, grabbed Evelyn by her collar, and slammed her hard against the medical equipment tower. The heavy metal monitor crashed down, pinning Evelyn to the floor as SWAT team officers flooded the room, their weapon lasers painting the dark room in red dots.
"GET ON THE GROUND! HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD!" the tactical officers roared, swarming the henchman and locking Evelyn in heavy steel restraints.
Sarah rushed over to her mother, pulling Eleanor into a tight, fierce hug. "Mom! Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"
"I'm okay... I'm okay, baby," Eleanor sobbed, holding Sarah tightly. "Your father... look at your father!"
Sarah turned around quickly to the hospital bed.
The heart monitor’s steady beep... beep... beep... began to accelerate.
Richard’s fingers twitched softly. His eyelids fluttered, and after hours of terrifying stillness, the old titan slowly opened his eyes, looking up at his wife and daughter.
"Sarah..." Richard rasped, his voice weak but clear. "My... my brave girl..."
Tears of immense relief finally spilled down Sarah’s cheeks. She dropped to her knees beside the bed, holding her father's calloused hand against her face. "I'm here, Dad. The company is safe. The traitors are gone."
Chief Henderson stepped into the ICU room, looking down at Evelyn Vance as she was hoisted to her feet by two federal agents.
"Evelyn Vance," Henderson said sternly. "You are under federal arrest for high treason, attempted murder, and leading an international criminal syndicate."
Evelyn didn't cry. She didn't beg. As she was dragged past Sarah, she stopped, leaning in close with a chilling, blood-curdling grin.
"You think you won tonight, Sarah Montgomery?" Evelyn whispered, her eyes dark with pure malice. "Vanguard Holdings isn't just a company. It's a network spanning three continents. And the real chairman... hasn't even stepped off his plane yet."
Sarah watched in silence as Evelyn was dragged down the hallway in chains.
The storm outside the hospital window was finally beginning to clear, the first faint light of dawn breaking over the city skyline.
Her family was safe. Her father was awake. The empire was hers.
Suddenly, Sarah's phone buzzed in her hand one last time.
She looked down at the screen. It was an incoming call from an international country code she didn't recognize—a caller ID that displayed only a single, ominous symbol:
May you like
[THE CHAIRMAN]
Sarah took a deep breath, slid her thumb across the screen, and placed the phone to her ear...
