Part 5: The ultimate showdown begins!

Part 5: The ultimate showdown begins!

The rain slammed down hard onto the wet tarmac, echoing the thunderous beat of Sarah’s heart. High-beam headlights illuminated the thick mist between Sarah and her stepbrother, creating a ghostly arena around the idling jet.

Julian’s thumb hovered less than a millimeter above the glowing red button of the remote detonator. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and filled with a desperate, manic triumph.

"Tick-tock, Sarah," Julian taunted, stepping closer to the stairs of the Gulfstream. "Five seconds. Make your choice. Do you keep your dignity and watch the Montgomery servers burn to ash, or do you let me step onto this plane and keep your precious company alive?"

Chloe Bennett was already backing up the metal stairs, clutching the heavy metallic briefcase against her chest like a shield. She looked terrified, her expensive hair drenched and plastered to her face, but greed kept her glued to Julian’s side.

Sarah didn't flinch. She didn't scream, and she didn't beg. Instead, a slow, icy smile spread across her lips—a calm that terrified Julian far more than rage ever could.

"You always were impatient, Julian," Sarah said, her voice cutting through the roar of the rain and jet engines. "That was your fatal flaw in business, and it’s your fatal flaw tonight."

Julian’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"You really think I didn't notice the breach in the server room three weeks ago?" Sarah took a slow, deliberate step forward, unbothered by the rain soaking through her white jumpsuit. "You think I didn't notice Mark's sudden, reckless wire transfers to Chloe's offshore accounts?"

Julian's thumb twitched over the button. "Shut up! You're bluffing!"

"Try it," Sarah said softly, stopping just five feet away from him. "Press the button."

Sweat mixed with rainwater ran down Julian’s face. Furious, he slammed his thumb down on the red detonator.

Silence.

No explosion. No alarm. No distant plume of smoke rising over the city skyline.

Julian stared at the little silver device in his hand in disbelief. He furiously clicked the button three, four, five times. "What... what did you do?! Why isn't it working?!"

"Because three days ago, our cyber-security division replaced the remote receivers in the main server farm," Sarah explained smoothly, her tone utterly ruthless. "That device in your hand isn't connected to our servers, Julian. It’s connected to the tracking beacon inside Chloe’s metallic briefcase."

Chloe let out a sharp gasp, dropping the briefcase onto the wet aluminum stairs. It tumbled down, clattering loudly before landing right at Sarah's feet.

"You set us up!" Chloe shrieked, backing away toward the open plane door. "Julian, you said she had no idea! You said this was foolproof!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Julian roared, his face contorting in pure rage. He tossed the useless detonator aside and reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a sharp, silver folding knife. "I don't need the servers, Sarah! The hard-copy deeds in that briefcase are the only things that matter! Give it to me, or I swear to God I'll ruin that pretty face of yours!"

"Julian, stop!" Arthur Sterling screamed from behind the SUV, stepping out alongside the four armed security guards who immediately drew their sidearms. "Drop the weapon!"

"Stay back!" Julian yelled, lunging forward with the knife aimed directly at Sarah's chest. "I built this empire too! I deserve half of it!"

Sarah didn't even blink. Having trained in personal defense since she was sixteen under her father's chief bodyguard, she sidestepped the wild thrust with effortless grace. She grabbed Julian’s wrist, twisted it sharply until the blade clattered to the ground, and slammed her forearm against his throat, forcing him flat onto his back against the hood of the steaming SUV.

Julian groaned in pain, pinned down, staring up into the eyes of the sister he had so foolishly underestimated.

"You deserve nothing, Julian," Sarah hissed, leaning in close. "You betrayed our father. You humiliated my mother. And you traded your own honor for a fraction of what I would have willingly shared with you if you had just been an honest man."

Two security guards rushed in, grabbing Julian’s arms and pinning him to the metal hood with heavy handcuffs.

Panic seized Chloe. Seeing her accomplice captured, she turned and scrambled into the cabin of the Gulfstream jet, screaming at the pilot: "Take off! TAKE OFF NOW! I'll pay you double!"

The jet engines whined loudly, preparing for taxi.

"Arthur!" Sarah called out, kicking the metallic briefcase toward him. "Secure the deeds!"

"On it, Ms. Montgomery!" Arthur shouted, retrieving the briefcase and locking it inside the armored trunk of the SUV.

Sarah turned her gaze to the moving aircraft. She picked up the fallen knife from the tarmac, strode over to the runway's main emergency control box near the perimeter gate, and slashed the primary power cables in one swift stroke.

The entire runway lit grid went pitch black instantly.

The jet pilot slammed on the brakes, bringing the heavy aircraft to a screeching halt just yards from the boundary fence. In the dark, the pilot opened the cockpit window and threw out his hands in surrender, unwilling to risk a blind takeoff in the pouring rain.

Within seconds, flashing blue and red lights flooded the dark tarmac.

Four city police cruisers, accompanied by heavy black SUVs bearing the Montgomery Global emblem, tore through the shattered gates. Chief of Police Henderson stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a megaphone.

"Julian Montgomery! Chloe Bennett!" Chief Henderson’s voice boomed over the storm. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and attempted extortion! Step away from the vehicles with your hands raised!"

Julian was hoisted to his feet by the guards, his tailored suit ruined, his hair matted with mud. He looked at Sarah with pure hatred, but under the glare of the police lights, all that was left in his eyes was sheer, pathetic defeat.

As the officers cuffed Chloe and dragged her weeping out of the jet, Chief Henderson walked up to Sarah, handing her a dry towel.

"Sensational work, Ms. Montgomery," Henderson said respectfully. "We have enough digital evidence and confession tapes from Mark Vance to lock both of them away for a very long time."

"Thank you, Chief," Sarah said softly, wiping the rain from her face.

She thought it was finally over. The deeds were safe, the traitors were in handcuffs, and her mother’s honor had been vindicated.

Suddenly, Arthur’s phone rang again. He answered it, but within three seconds, his face turned ghost-white. He slowly turned to Sarah, his hand trembling as he held out the phone.

"Ms. Montgomery..." Arthur stammered, his voice choked with emotion. "It's... it's the hospital."

Sarah’s heart dropped into her stomach. "My mother?"

"No," Arthur swallowed hard, his eyes wide with horror. "Your father... Richard. Right after you left the hotel, a masked driver in a heavy pickup truck rammed directly into his limousine..."
