PART 5 – The Promise Was Finally Kept
Several weeks later...
The temporary shelter closed.
Families who had survived the disaster slowly rebuilt their lives.
Ben and Lily finally had a home again.
Not a mansion.
Not a perfect house.
Just a small place filled with warmth.
Every evening...
David cooked dinner.
Lily laughed.
Ben still divided every piece of bread into two halves.
Old habits were hard to forget.
One night David gently placed another slice onto Ben's plate.
"You don't have to give away your dinner anymore, buddy."
Ben looked confused.
"What if Lily gets hungry later?"
David smiled through tears.
"Then I'll make more."

Ben believed him.

David created The Last Bread Foundation, providing emergency food and shelter for children separated from their families after natural disasters.
At the entrance stood a bronze sculpture of a little boy sharing his final piece of bread with his sister.
Below it were words that every visitor stopped to read:
"The greatest heroes are often children who choose to stay hungry so someone they love can eat."
When Ben grew up, people often asked him what he remembered most from those terrible days.
He never talked about the fire.
Or the cold nights.
Or the hunger.
He simply smiled and answered,
