PART 3 – The Backpack Beneath the Rubble
Rescue workers carefully lifted the broken concrete.
Beneath it lay the dusty backpack.
Ben recognized it immediately.
"That's Mommy's."
Inside were children's clothes...
A family photograph...
And a notebook wrapped in plastic.
Thomas slowly opened the first page.
If someone finds this...
Please help my children.
Don't let Ben think this is his fault.
His hands trembled.
The notebook explained everything.
Three days earlier...
A massive apartment fire had spread through the building in the middle of the night.
Their mother had carried Lily outside first.
Then ran back inside...
To rescue Ben.
The ceiling collapsed before she could escape.
Rescuers searched for survivors until dawn.
They believed everyone had been evacuated.
No one realized two frightened children had hidden inside a nearby abandoned warehouse, waiting exactly where their mother had told them to stay.
Ben still believed she was coming back.
Every morning he told Lily,
"Mommy knows where we are."
Every night...
He repeated the same promise.
"I won't let anything happen to you."
Thomas quietly closed the notebook.
Then noticed something written on the final page.
If you ever find David Carter...
Tell him his children are waiting.
Thomas frowned.
"Who's David?"
No one knew.
But that evening...
The children's story appeared on national television.
