Detective Hannah Brooks carefully unfolded the damaged letter.
Much of the ink had disappeared in the rain.
But enough remained to tell a heartbreaking story.
The letter belonged to Sarah Mitchell.
A twenty-six-year-old single mother.
She had worked nights cleaning office buildings while caring for Mason and Rosie during the day.
The previous week...
The apartment where they lived had been condemned after a fire damaged several units.
Residents were ordered to leave immediately.
Sarah had nowhere to go.
No family.
No savings.
Only two frightened children.
Witnesses later told investigators they saw Sarah walking with Mason and Rosie toward an old bus stop.
She kissed both children.
Held Mason's little face between her hands.
Then whispered,
"Stay here."
"I'm going to find help."
"I'll be back before dark."
She never returned.
Not because she abandoned them.
Because only thirty minutes later...
A speeding truck struck her while she was crossing the highway.
She survived.
But suffered a severe head injury.
She had remained unconscious ever since.
The hospital admitted her as an unidentified patient.
No identification.
No emergency contact.
No one knew two small children were still waiting exactly where she had left them.
When Olivia heard the truth...
She broke down crying.
But the greatest heartbreak was yet to come.
Mason still believed his mother had simply gotten lost.
