PART 5 – The First Night Tommy Slept Like a Child

PART 5 – The First Night Tommy Slept Like a Child

That evening...

For the first time in three days...

Tommy didn't fall asleep sitting up.

He didn't wake every few minutes to check whether Emma was still breathing.

He didn't search every doorway for his mother.

Instead...

He fell asleep on his father's chest.

One tiny hand still resting protectively on Emma's blanket.

The social worker smiled sadly.

"He never stopped watching over her."

Jacob gently kissed Tommy's forehead.

"He doesn't have to anymore."

Months later...

Tommy started preschool.

Teachers noticed something unusual.

Every nap time...

He instinctively reached behind his back.

As if checking whether Emma was still there.

One afternoon, his teacher asked,

"What are you looking for?"

Tommy smiled.

"I keep forgetting..."

"Daddy carries her now."

Jacob eventually founded Hannah's Promise, a charity providing emergency housing and sibling support for children who suddenly lose a parent.

At the entrance stood a bronze statue.

A tiny boy.

Carrying his baby sister.

Beneath it were words that visitors never forgot:

"No child should have to become an adult just to keep their family alive."

Years later, when Tommy was asked what he remembered most about those days, he didn't mention the hunger.

He didn't mention the cold streets.

He didn't even mention the fear.

He simply smiled and said,

"I remember the day someone finally told me... I could be a little boy again."

The End.
