"Unfortunate Lives" Part Two The Crying Toddler Carried His Baby Sister Through the City... Repeating the Promise He Made to Their Mother.

PART 2 – "Mommy Said I Must Never Put Her Down."
The crossing guard's name was Martha.
She had helped children cross Maple Avenue for twenty-six years.
She had seen frightened first graders.
Lost backpacks.
Broken bicycles.
But she had never seen a toddler carrying another baby.
She carefully untied the blanket wrapped around the little boy's shoulders.
The baby couldn't have been more than six months old.
Still asleep.
Still warm.
Still trusting the tiny brother whose legs were shaking from exhaustion.
"What are your names?" Martha asked gently.
"I'm Tommy."
"And this is Emma."
"How old are you?"
Tommy lifted three fingers.
Then immediately looked at his sister.
"She's hungry."
Martha opened her lunch bag and handed him a sandwich.
Without hesitation...
Tommy tore it in half.
He stuffed the larger piece into a plastic cup, pouring warm water over it until it became soft enough to feed Emma later.
Only then did he eat the smaller half.
"You should eat first," Martha whispered.
Tommy shook his head.
"My mommy said..."
"Little sisters always eat first."
Martha couldn't hold back her tears.
"When did you last see your mommy?"
Tommy looked toward the bus station.
"They took her away."
"They said she'd come back."
"I waited."
"I kept waiting."
"She didn't."
Then he quietly added...

"But Mommy told me..."
"...never put Emma down."
