Three weeks later...
Chicago Police Headquarters held a ceremony unlike any in its history.
Officers lined both sides of the courtyard.
Television cameras filled the street.
But the crowd wasn't waiting for a speech.
They were waiting for one reunion.
A patrol car slowly pulled into the station.
Ben stood nervously beside Jake.
His tiny hands trembled.
The passenger door opened.
Daniel stepped out.
Still walking with a cane.
Still thinner than before.
But alive.
For one long second...
Neither father nor son moved.
Then Ben ran.
"Dad!"
Daniel dropped to one knee despite the pain.
He wrapped both arms around his son.
Neither could stop crying.
Rex barked happily and pressed himself between them...
Just as he had done years earlier.
The officers surrounding them quietly wiped away tears.
Later that afternoon...
Police Chief Morrison removed Rex's service leash.
"Today," he announced,
"this department honors the officer who never stopped searching."
He wasn't talking about Daniel.
He was talking about Rex.
The German Shepherd received the department's Medal of Valor.
At the base of the statue later built in front of headquarters were simple words:
"He could not tell us where his partner was... but he never stopped leading us home."
Years later, whenever Ben was asked why he became a police officer...
He always gave the same answer.
"My dad taught me courage."
"But Rex..."
