PART 4 – The Father Who Never Came Home

PART 4 – The Father Who Never Came Home
Michael Hayes had spent seven years believing his family no longer existed.
He had been an investigative journalist covering organized crime.
One assignment had gone terribly wrong.
After exposing a powerful trafficking network, he entered federal witness protection.
For Emily's safety...
Officials told her he had died.
For Michael's safety...
He was told Emily and their unborn child had disappeared overseas.
Neither story was true.
Both had been lies meant to protect them.
Until that evening.
The television showed a little boy sitting alone outside a hospital.
Holding a worn blue backpack.
Michael froze.
Emily had sewn that backpack by hand.
He would never mistake it.
He drove through the night.
When he reached St. Mary's Hospital, Margaret quietly led him to the entrance.
There sat Ethan.
Curled up on the same bench.
Still watching the fourth-floor window.
Michael knelt carefully.
"Ethan?"
The little boy looked up.
"Yes?"
"I'm..."
His voice broke.
"I'm your dad."
Ethan stared for several long seconds.
Then asked the question that shattered every heart nearby.
"My mommy said daddies always come home."
"What took you so long?"
Michael collapsed into tears.
He wrapped Ethan tightly in his arms.
May you like
"I'm here now."
"And I'll spend the rest of my life making up for every day I missed."
