PART 3 – The Letter Beneath the Pillow

PART 3 – The Letter Beneath the Pillow
Doctors rushed into Emily's room.
Margaret gently covered Ethan's ears.
"We need to wait here, sweetheart."
Minutes felt like hours.
Finally...
Dr. Carter stepped out.
His face said everything before he spoke.
"I'm sorry."
Emily Dawson had passed away.
Margaret's knees weakened.
How could she tell a six-year-old that the only person waiting for him would never wake up?
She entered Emily's room one last time.
As nurses prepared the bed...
One of them noticed a folded envelope tucked beneath the pillow.
Across the front, written in shaky handwriting, were four heartbreaking words.
For My Little Ethan.
Inside, Emily had written:
My sweet boy,
If you are reading this, then Mommy couldn't keep her promise.
Please don't be angry.
I fought as hard as I could.
Margaret could barely continue.
Eat whenever someone offers you food.
Don't pretend you're not hungry.
And please...
Don't wait outside this hospital forever.
Everyone in the room was crying.
The final paragraph stopped them cold.
If anyone can find Michael Hayes...
Tell him Ethan has his smile.
Margaret frowned.
"Who's Michael Hayes?"
Hospital staff searched every database.
Nothing.
No address.
No emergency contact.
No recent records.
The letter seemed to lead nowhere.
That evening, Ethan sat on the same hospital steps.
Still smiling toward the fourth-floor window.
Because no one had found the courage to tell him the truth.
Across town...
