PART 3 – The Boy Who Slept in the Cemetery

PART 3 – The Boy Who Slept in the Cemetery
George immediately stepped between Liam and the officer.
"What do you mean, 'go back'?"
Officer Rachel Hayes sighed.
"I'm not here to arrest him."
"I'm trying to protect him."
She gently crouched in front of Liam.
"Liam..."
"Everyone at the shelter is worried."
Liam shook his head violently.
"I don't want to go."
"They'll separate me from Grandpa."
George frowned.
"But your grandfather..."
Liam quietly nodded toward the old cemetery across the street.
"My grandpa is there."
Rachel lowered her eyes.
George slowly understood.
Liam's parents had died in a car accident four years earlier.
His grandfather had raised him alone.
Six months ago...
His grandfather passed away from heart failure.
Since then...
Liam had been moved into a crowded children's shelter.
Every night...
He secretly climbed out the window.
Walked nearly two miles.
And slept beside his grandfather's grave.
Because...
"It's the only place that still feels like home."
George covered his mouth.
Rachel continued quietly.
"Every evening..."
"He comes here."
"He watches birthday parties through your window."
"He never asks for cake."
"He only watches families."
George looked toward Liam.
"Why?"
Liam smiled sadly.
"I wanted to remember..."
"...what families look like."
Nobody in the bakery could hold back tears anymore.
Then Rachel handed George a small plastic bag.
"We found this under his pillow."
Inside was an old photograph.
A man in military uniform.
Holding baby Liam.
George turned the picture over.
Written on the back were the words:
If anything happens to me... find Captain Daniel Brooks. He promised he'd always protect my son.
Rachel frowned.
"We've searched."
"No record."
"No address."
"No trace."
George looked again at the name.

Something suddenly felt familiar.
Very familiar.
