The bakery owner, George Miller, stood frozen in the rain.
For thirty years, he had baked thousands of birthday cakes.
Some cost fifty dollars.
Some cost five thousand.
He had watched children laugh as candles flickered across colorful frosting.
Yet never—not once—had he imagined meeting a child who had never celebrated a birthday.
George unlocked the bakery door.
"Come inside."
The little boy hesitated.
"My shoes are dirty."

"My floor can be cleaned."
"A child's heart is much harder to fix."
The boy stepped inside for the first time.
His eyes widened at the warm lights, the sweet smell of fresh bread, and rows of beautifully decorated cakes.
George disappeared into the kitchen.
Twenty minutes later, he returned carrying a small chocolate cake.
Seven tiny candles glowed softly.
Across the frosting were written three simple words.
Happy Birthday, Liam.
The little boy stared silently.
His lips trembled.
George smiled.
"Go ahead."
"Make a wish."
Instead...
Liam took one step backward.
"I can't."
George frowned.
"Why not?"
The little boy looked down at the candles.
"Every time I wished for my mom and dad to come back..."
"They never did."

"I stopped making wishes."
The bakery became completely silent.
Several customers quietly wiped tears from their eyes.
George slowly knelt beside him.
"This time..."
"You don't have to wish alone."
Everyone in the bakery began singing.
For the first time in seven years...
Someone sang Happy Birthday to Liam.
But halfway through the song...
The front door suddenly burst open.
A police officer stepped inside.
He looked directly at Liam.
"There you are."
"We've been looking everywhere."
Liam's smile disappeared.
