PART 3 – The Promise Inside the Backpack

PART 3 – The Promise Inside the Backpack

Anthony opened the letter with trembling hands.

The paper was wrinkled, stained by rain, and covered with shaky handwriting.

To whoever finds my children...

My name is Grace Turner.

Please don't think I abandoned them.

I left only because I believed it was the only way to save them.

Anthony felt his chest tighten.

The letter continued.

Noah thinks I'm looking for work.

Please let him keep believing that a little longer.

He's carried too much already.

Anthony glanced toward the couch.

Noah had fallen asleep sitting upright...

One arm wrapped protectively around Ava.

As though even in sleep...

He was still afraid someone might take her away.

The final page explained everything.

Grace had been diagnosed with advanced leukemia months earlier.

After losing her job and their apartment, she hid the children in abandoned buildings while desperately searching for work.

One week earlier...

She collapsed outside a homeless shelter.

She never regained consciousness.

Anthony quietly wiped away tears.

The last paragraph nearly broke him.

If you can find David Brooks...

Tell him I never stopped loving him.

Tell him Noah has his smile.

Anthony immediately called the police.

Detective Olivia Reed searched every national database.

David Brooks.

Former firefighter.

Missing after a warehouse explosion seven years earlier.

Official status:

Presumed dead.

Anthony folded the letter.

"So these children..."

"...have no one left."

But hundreds of miles away...

May you like

A television in a rehabilitation hospital had just shown Noah's face.

And one man suddenly sat bolt upright in bed.
