PART 4 — The Morgue Was Never Meant for the Dead

PART 4 — The Morgue Was Never Meant for the Dead

Detective Mason didn't wait for backup.

He ran.

Daniel followed close behind.

Two FBI agents sprinted through the hospital corridors as nurses and patients stepped aside in confusion.

By the time they reached the basement level...

The morgue doors were already closing.

"Stop!"

The heavy metal door slammed shut.

Agent Collins drew his weapon.

"Hospital security!"

No answer.

Mason forced the electronic lock override.

Click.

The doors slowly opened.

The room was ice cold.

Rows of stainless-steel body drawers lined both walls.

Everything appeared perfectly normal.

Too normal.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A fresh trail of blood.

Only a few drops.

Leading toward the far corner.

"Spread out," Mason ordered.

The agents searched every storage room.

Every refrigeration unit.

Every office.

Nothing.

Then one of the technicians called out.

"Detective!"

"There are fresh tire marks."

A hospital gurney had recently been wheeled toward a service elevator rarely used by staff.

The elevator was still moving.

Down.

"There isn't another basement," Daniel said.

The morgue supervisor looked confused.

"There shouldn't be."

Agent Collins pressed the emergency override.

The elevator stopped.

But instead of returning...

The control panel suddenly went black.

Someone had cut the power remotely.

Meanwhile...

Dr. Victor Hale calmly removed his surgical mask inside a hidden laboratory beneath the hospital.

He wasn't alone.

Three men in business suits stood beside another sealed medical pod.

Inside...

A middle-aged man lay completely motionless.

His heartbeat barely registered.

One of the men frowned.

"The Carter woman survived."

Hale remained calm.

"She wasn't supposed to."

"You underestimated the maid."

He smiled coldly.

"I underestimated compassion."

The oldest man adjusted his expensive watch.

"What about the husband?"

"He knows too much."

"And the detective?"

"They all do now."

The man looked toward the unconscious patient.

"Move the project."

"Tonight."

Back upstairs...

Emily suddenly began screaming.

"No!"

Doctors rushed into her ICU room.

She was pointing wildly toward the television mounted on the wall.

"They're taking him!"

Daniel grabbed her hand.

"Who?"

"The man beside me..."

"What man?"

"In recovery."

"The patient they brought in after my surgery."

She struggled to breathe.

"He wasn't sick."

"He kept whispering..."

"'They're going to bury me too.'"

Detective Mason immediately checked hospital admissions.

"There was another patient in the recovery wing."

His fingers froze over the keyboard.

"Where is he?"

The administrator searched the records.

Silence.

Then...

"According to the system..."

"He died yesterday."

Emily shook her head violently.

"No!"

"He was alive."

"I heard him talking."

The administrator looked even paler.

"His body..."

"...never arrived at the county morgue."

Agent Collins' phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"What?"

His expression changed.

"When?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"Mason..."

"The FBI just identified Victor Hale."

"And?"

"He isn't just a surgeon."

"He has been secretly connected to eight hospitals in four states."

"All eight hospitals reported the exact same pattern."

Mason stared.

"What pattern?"

Collins swallowed.

"Patients pronounced dead..."

"...whose bodies were cremated within twenty-four hours."

Daniel's blood turned to ice.

"How many?"

Collins looked at the classified report.

"For the last fifteen years..."

"There have been..."

He hesitated.

"...one hundred and eighteen cases."

The room fell silent.

Emily whispered the question no one wanted answered.

"What if..."

"...they weren't dead either?"

At that exact moment...

Every computer screen in the hospital suddenly went black.

One sentence appeared in bright red letters.
