The funeral chapel was bright, white, and silent until the maid raised the crowbar.

She stood beside the glossy white coffin in her orange uniform, breathing hard, tears in her eyes.

Then she swung.

Crack.

Mourners screamed as white wood splintered across the marble floor.

A man in a black suit rushed forward, his face twisted with rage.

“Stop! What are you doing?”

The maid hit the coffin again.

Crack.

People covered their mouths. Someone cried out for security.

The man grabbed her arm.

“Have you lost your mind?”

The maid turned to him, shaking but fierce.

“She’s not dead.”

The room went still.

His face hardened.

“My wife is gone.”

The maid leaned closer, voice barely above a whisper.

“I heard her.”

His anger faltered.

The maid pointed at the broken hole in the coffin lid.

“Listen.”

He bent down, trembling.

For one second, there was nothing.

Then something moved inside the darkness.

A pale hand slowly reached through the broken wood.

The man stumbled back, breathless.

“No… no, that’s impossible.”

The maid looked at him.

“Open it. Right now.”

His lips trembled as he stared at the hand.

“Emily?”

PART 2 — The Woman Inside the Coffin

The pale hand trembled through the shattered wood.

Someone screamed.

Another mourner fainted.

The funeral chapel, moments earlier filled with quiet prayers and whispered condolences, erupted into complete chaos.

"Open it!" the maid shouted.

"She's alive!"

The man in the black suit—Daniel Carter—could barely breathe.

His wife had supposedly died twelve hours earlier after suffering cardiac arrest during recovery from minor surgery.

He had identified her body himself.

He had signed the death certificate.

He had planned this funeral.

Now...

A hand was reaching toward him from inside her coffin.

"Emily..."

His voice cracked.

Without another thought, Daniel grabbed the brass latch with trembling hands.

"It's locked," he whispered.

The funeral director hurried forward.

"Stand back!"

He fumbled with a master key so badly that he dropped it twice.

"Hurry!" the maid cried.

"She doesn't have much air left!"

Finally...

Click.

The lid sprang open.

Every person inside the chapel held their breath.

Emily lay inside dressed in a white burial gown.

Her face was ghostly pale.

Her lips were blue.

Her eyelids fluttered weakly.

Then...

She gasped.

A desperate, painful breath ripped through her lungs.

The sound echoed through the silent chapel.

"She's breathing!"

Several guests immediately called 911.

Others stood frozen, unable to believe what they were witnessing.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside the coffin.

"My God..."

He gently held Emily's face.

"Emily... can you hear me?"

Her eyes opened only slightly.

They searched until they found him.

Then she whispered two broken words.

"...don't..."

"...trust..."

Before she could finish...

She lost consciousness again.

Paramedics burst into the chapel less than four minutes later.

One medic checked her pulse.

Then looked up in disbelief.

"She's alive!"

Another immediately began administering oxygen.

"Blood pressure dropping."

"We're losing her."

As they lifted Emily onto a stretcher, Daniel reached for her hand.

"I'm coming with you."

A police officer stopped him.

"Sir..."

"We need everyone to remain here."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

The officer looked toward the broken coffin.

"This is no longer a funeral."

"It's a crime scene."

The maid stood quietly near the back of the chapel while detectives began questioning witnesses.

One investigator approached her.

"What's your name?"

"Sophia."

"How did you know she was alive?"

Sophia looked toward the ambulance disappearing outside.

"I clean the funeral home every morning."

"This morning..."

"I heard knocking."

The detective frowned.

"What kind of knocking?"

Sophia closed her eyes, remembering.

"Very faint."

"Three knocks."

She demonstrated softly against the wooden pew.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

"I thought maybe I imagined it."

"But when everyone left after preparing the body..."

"I heard it again."

Her voice began shaking.

"I told Mr. Wallace."

"The funeral director?"

She nodded.

"He said I was being emotional."

"He told me dead bodies don't knock."

"So why didn't you call the police?"

Sophia looked down at the crowbar lying beside the shattered coffin.

"Because..."

"I went back one more time."

She swallowed hard.

"I heard someone whisper..."

The detective leaned closer.

"What did they say?"

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

"They whispered..."

'Please...'

'Help me...'

Across the room...

The funeral director, Mr. Wallace, watched the interview from a distance.

Sweat slowly formed across his forehead.

His hands trembled almost imperceptibly.

One detective noticed.

"Mr. Wallace?"

He forced a smile.

"Yes?"

"Can you explain why Mrs. Carter was embalmed..."

The detective paused, reading the medical report just delivered.

"...without a legally completed embalming authorization?"

Wallace's smile disappeared.

"That..."

"There must be some mistake."

The detective slowly closed the folder.

"There are several mistakes."

He looked directly into Wallace's eyes.

"For example..."

"The hospital pronounced Emily Carter dead at 8:12 a.m."

"You received her body at 8:34 a.m."

"But according to your records..."

"You ordered her coffin..."

...two days before she supposedly died.

The entire chapel fell silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward the funeral director.

"What did he just say?"

The detective didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment...

A forensic technician walked into the chapel carrying Emily's medical bracelet.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

"The barcode on her wristband..."

"...doesn't belong to Emily Carter."
