PART 3 — The Death Certificate Was Never Meant for Emily

PART 3 — The Death Certificate Was Never Meant for Emily
The emergency room outside Trauma Bay Three became a fortress.
Two police officers stood outside Emily Carter's room.
Then four.
Then eight.
Within an hour, FBI agents quietly arrived and took over the entire hospital floor.
No one understood why.
Except Detective Mason.
He stared at the medical bracelet lying inside an evidence bag.
"The barcode belongs to another patient," he murmured.
"Someone switched identities."
Daniel paced the hallway like a man losing his mind.
"Can I see my wife?"
"Not yet."
"When?"
"No one enters until the toxicology team finishes."
Daniel slammed his fist against the wall.
"My wife was buried alive!"
"And you're worried about paperwork?"
Detective Mason looked directly at him.
"I'm worried about who wanted her buried."
That sentence stopped Daniel cold.
Inside the ICU...
Emily slowly regained consciousness.
Machines beeped steadily around her.
A breathing mask covered her face.
When she opened her eyes...
The first thing she did wasn't cry.
She reached for the nurse's wrist.
"No..."
Her voice barely existed.
"They'll..."
"...come back."
The nurse leaned closer.
"Who?"
Emily's terrified eyes darted toward the window.
"The doctor..."
"It wasn't..."
"...an accident."
Three hours later...
The toxicology report arrived.
Dr. Rachel Owens read it twice before speaking.
"This is impossible."
Detective Mason frowned.
"What?"
"Emily didn't suffer cardiac arrest."
Silence.
"What caused it?"
Dr. Owens placed the report on the table.
"She was injected with an extremely rare paralytic drug."
"It slows the heartbeat until it's almost impossible to detect."
"It suppresses breathing."
"The patient appears clinically dead..."
"...while remaining completely conscious."
Daniel felt sick.
"You mean..."
"She knew everything?"
The doctor nodded slowly.
"She couldn't move."
"Couldn't speak."
"But she could hear every word around her."
Daniel covered his face.
His wife had heard doctors pronounce her dead...
Heard strangers prepare her body...
Heard mourners crying over her coffin...
And had remained trapped inside her own body.
Emily finally agreed to speak later that evening.
Only Daniel...
Detective Mason...
And Agent Collins from the FBI remained inside the room.
Emily looked exhausted.
But determined.
"I remember everything."
Daniel squeezed her hand.
"What happened?"
She stared at the ceiling.
"After surgery..."
"A man entered my recovery room."
"I thought he was another doctor."
She closed her eyes.
"He smiled..."
"Then injected something into my IV."
"I tried pressing the call button."
"I couldn't move."
"I couldn't even blink."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I heard someone say..."
"'She's ready.'"
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Did you recognize his voice?"
Emily nodded weakly.
"I've heard it before."
"Where?"
She turned slowly toward her husband.
"...At your company's charity gala."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"The man shaking hands with your business partner..."
"The one everyone called..."
She swallowed painfully.
"Dr. Victor Hale."
Detective Mason immediately opened his laptop.
Within seconds...
Victor Hale's profile appeared.
Chief of Surgery.
Member of three medical boards.
National award winner.
Television medical expert.
Perfect reputation.
"No complaints."
"No lawsuits."
"No disciplinary actions."
Agent Collins quietly said,
"That's exactly the kind of man who hides in plain sight."
Before anyone could continue...
A young nurse burst into the room.
"Detective!"
"What is it?"
She looked terrified.
"The hospital security office..."
"It just called."
"What happened?"
She struggled to breathe.
"Someone accessed Emily's medical records..."
"...using Dr. Hale's password."
Detective Mason frowned.
"But Hale has been in surgery all afternoon."
The nurse slowly shook her head.
"That's not the strange part."
"What is?"
She handed him a security photograph.
"This image was captured..."
"...nine minutes ago."
Everyone leaned closer.
Daniel's heart nearly stopped.
Standing inside the hospital morgue...
Still wearing a doctor's white coat...
Was Dr. Victor Hale.
And in his hands...
May you like
He was carrying another body bag.
But the morgue log showed...
