Part 4 - The empire strikes back.
By sunrise, the red emergency lights at St. Catherine’s Hospital had been replaced by the quiet, efficient calm of Julian’s private security detail.
The entire neonatal wing was now locked down under armed guard. Our daughter, whom we named Sarah after my late mother, was stabilized inside a state-of-the-art incubator. Her vitals were steady, her tiny chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, comforting pattern.
While I rested in a private suite, Julian sat at a glass table in the corner of the room, surrounded by three encrypted laptops and a team of forensic accountants.
"Genevieve has already broken in custody," Julian’s head of security reported softly, handing him a digital tablet. "Once she realized you severed her offshore trusts and access to the Blackwood accounts, she confessed to everything. Victoria Vance offered her a twenty percent stake in Vance Global if she eliminated Sophia and the baby before the merger talks finalized."
Julian didn't even look up from his screen. "And Victoria's current position?"
"She’s hosting an emergency shareholder summit at Vance Global headquarters in two hours," the chief investigator added. "She intends to announce the complete acquisition of Blackwood International’s board voting rights, using forged authorization documents signed by your mother."
I pushed myself up against the pillows, clutching my surgical binder as a wave of cold determination washed over me. "She thinks I'm dead, doesn't she?"
Julian closed his laptop, his dark eyes shifting toward me with a look of fierce, protective pride. "She thinks you bled out on my mother's marble staircase. She has no idea you're sitting here."
"Then let's not keep her waiting," I said, swinging my legs over the side of the hospital bed.
Two hours later, the grand auditorium at Vance Global headquarters was packed with international press, billionaire investors, and senior board members.
Victoria Vance stood at the crystal podium, dressed in a sharp white power suit, her diamond necklace glinting under the stage lights. Behind her, a massive digital screen displayed the proposed corporate merger logo: Vance-Blackwood Conglomerate.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Victoria announced, her voice booming smoothly through the auditorium speakers. "Today marks the dawn of a new era. With the tragic, unforeseen health complications surrounding the Blackwood family, Genevieve Blackwood has formally transferred full voting control of Blackwood International to me."
Applaud broke out across the front rows of wealthy investors. Victoria smiled—a victorious, predatory smile.
"Before you take that vote, Victoria," a clear, ringing voice echoed from the back of the auditorium, "you might want to check the legal ownership of those shares."
The heavy double doors of the auditorium swung open.
The applause died instantly. Cameras swiveled around in a frenzy of flashing lights.
I walked down the central aisle in a tailored black suit, my posture straight despite the fresh surgical stitches beneath my coat. Beside me walked Julian, flanked by four federal marshals and two lead prosecutors from the Department of Justice.
Victoria’s face drained of every ounce of color. Her hands gripped the edges of the podium so hard her knuckles turned white. "Sophia? That's... that's impossible."
"You thought a shove down a flight of stairs and a hired hit squad in a hospital could delete twenty years of murder and theft, Victoria?" I asked, stopping right at the foot of the stage.
I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out an gold-embossed leather folder—the original, unredacted birth certificate and international trust deeds left behind by my late father.
"My name isn't Sophia Miller," I announced to the room, my voice amplified by the reporters' open microphones. "I am Sophia Vance, the sole surviving daughter of Arthur Vance, the founder of this company."
Pandemonium broke out across the auditorium. Reporters surged forward, shouting questions as camera flashes illuminated the room like lightning.
"She's lying!" Victoria shrieked, losing her composure as she pointed a trembling finger at me. "She's an impostor! Security, remove her!"
None of the security guards moved.
Instead, the lead federal marshal stepped onto the stage, pulling a heavy set of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Victoria Vance," the marshal declared, his voice echoing over the auditorium speakers. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate conspiracy, wire fraud, and the assassination of Arthur Vance."
As the iron cuffs clicked tightly around Victoria's wrists, Julian stepped up beside me, placing a warm, solid hand on the small of my back.

Victoria looked at Julian, her eyes wild with rage. "You ruined everything, Julian! Your mother gave you to me! You were supposed to be my puppet!"
Julian looked down at her with cold, unyielding disgust. "My wife and daughter are alive, Victoria. And your empire ends today."
