Part 3 - Shadows in the darkness.

Part 3 - Shadows in the darkness.

Red emergency backup lights flickered on, painting the hospital room in an eerie, blood-colored glow. The high-pitched squeal of neonatal monitors rang through the darkness like warning sirens.

"The baby!" I screamed, pulling against the IV lines attached to my arm as agonizing pain tore through my abdomen. "Julian, she's in the incubator! They're trying to take her!"

Julian didn't hesitate for a single second. He pulled a compact black radio from his suit jacket and barked a single command. "Code Black. Lock down the entire third floor. Nobody leaves alive."

Within seconds, heavy steel fire doors slammed shut down the entire corridor. The Chief of Police drew his service weapon, stepping ahead of us as Julian scooped me up into his arms, carrying me straight toward the neonatal intensive care unit.

Inside the nursery, glass shattered.

Through the red emergency haze, I saw two men dressed in black tactical gear attempting to wheel a portable transport incubator toward the service elevator. On the floor, two nurses lay unconscious.

"Drop it!" the Chief yelled, raising his gun.

One of the men turned, leveling a silenced pistol. Before he could squeeze the trigger, the glass door exploded inward. Julian’s private security detail tackled both men to the floor in a brutal, decisive struggle, pinning them against the sterile tiles.

Julian set me down gently in a wheelchair beside the primary incubator. Inside, our newborn daughter—tiny, fragile, but breathing beneath a clear plastic dome—let out a faint, raspy cry.

I pressed my trembling hand against the warm glass, tears streaming down my face. "She's safe... Oh God, Julian, she's safe."

Julian stood over the pinned intruder, his boots grinding down on the man's wrist until a black encrypted radio fell onto the floor. Julian picked it up, his face an unreadable mask of cold, lethal focus.

"The job is done," a raspy, familiar female voice static-ed through the radio speaker. "Did you secure the child? We need her DNA before Julian realizes who Sophia's father really was."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked up at Julian, whose eyes slowly shifted from the radio directly to me.

"That voice..." Julian murmured, his jaw clenching. "That's Victoria Vance. The chairwoman of Vance Global."

The Chief of Police gasped. "Vance Global? They're your primary corporate rival!"

Julian stepped closer to my wheelchair, lowering himself to one knee so his eyes were level with mine. The mystery surrounding my past—the "suburban orphan" facade I had maintained since the day we met—was unraveling under the red glare of the emergency lights.

"Sophia," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that sent a shiver down my spine. "Victoria Vance has been searching for the sole surviving heiress of the Vance empire for twenty years... the girl who vanished after her father was assassinated in London."

I swallowed hard, clutching the edge of my hospital gown as my secret finally crumbled.

"I didn't marry you for your money, Julian," I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes. "I hid my real name because Victoria murdered my father to take control of Vance Global. Genevieve didn't just push me because she thought I was poor... she made a deal with Victoria to eliminate me so Vance Global could absorb Blackwood International through a forced merger."

Julian stayed silent for three agonizing seconds. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips—not of anger at me, but of pure, calculated devastation aimed at our enemies.

He reached down, picked up my hand, and pressed a soft kiss to my knuckles.

"Then it seems my mother and Victoria Vance made a fatal mistake," Julian said calmly, standing up and turning to the Chief of Police. "They thought they were destroying a defenseless girl. They have no idea they just declared war on the rightful owner of both empires."
