PART 5: The emergency lights failed.

PART 5: The emergency lights failed.

Then the backup lights failed.

For three terrifying seconds...

the ICU floor disappeared into complete darkness.

Only the shrill alarms of disconnected monitors echoed through the corridor.

Then red emergency lights flickered on.

Everything looked like a battlefield.

General Carter drew his sidearm.

"Federal agents!"

"Protect the patient!"

The hallway exploded into motion.

Nurses rushed patients toward protected rooms.

Medical staff barricaded ICU entrances.

FBI agents spread into defensive positions.

I stood beside Tessa's bed.

One hand held hers.

The other rested on the pistol General Carter had quietly handed me.

I hadn't touched a weapon since returning home.

I prayed I wouldn't have to.

Outside...

the elevator doors slowly slid open.

Three men stepped out.

White paramedic uniforms.

Medical masks.

Equipment bags.

To anyone else...

they looked perfectly normal.

To me...

they moved like soldiers.

Too coordinated.

Too calm.

Too alert.

Not one of them looked at the frightened nurses.

Their eyes searched only one thing.

Room numbers.

Agent Rachel Monroe watched through the cracked ICU door.

"They're professionals."

General Carter nodded.

"They've done this before."

One of the fake paramedics approached the nurses' station.

"We're here to transfer ICU Patient Twelve."

The head nurse frowned.

"No transfer was scheduled."

The man smiled.

"There is now."

She reached for the phone.

He reached first.

In one movement...

he broke her wrist.

The scream echoed through the hallway.

Masks dropped.

Silenced pistols appeared.

"It's them!" an agent shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

Patients screamed.

Doctors pulled people behind walls.

Bullets shattered glass doors.

Medical carts overturned across the corridor.

The assassins didn't fire wildly.

Every shot was controlled.

Disciplined.

Military.

They weren't trying to kill everyone.

Only anyone standing between them...

and Tessa.

One assassin tossed a flash grenade.

The corridor filled with blinding white light.

Another sprinted forward.

General Carter intercepted him.

The older general was well past his prime...

but instinct never ages.

He drove the attacker into the wall before the man could reach the ICU entrance.

Another assassin fired twice.

An FBI agent dropped to one knee.

Still firing.

Still protecting the doorway.

Rachel shouted,

"Daniel!"

"The window!"

I turned.

A fourth attacker.

Already climbing through the ICU balcony after rappelling from the hospital roof.

He had bypassed the hallway entirely.

His rifle pointed directly toward Tessa.

Time slowed.

Without thinking...

I threw myself across the bed.

The shot shattered the heart monitor instead of Tessa's chest.

Glass exploded across the room.

The assassin chambered another round.

He never fired.

Rachel's bullet struck his shoulder.

He fell backward through the broken window...

disappearing into the darkness below.

The remaining attackers immediately changed tactics.

One shouted,

"Abort!"

Within seconds...

smoke grenades rolled across the hallway.

Visibility vanished.

By the time ventilation cleared the smoke...

they were gone.

No bodies.

No weapons.

Only blood trails leading to an emergency stairwell.

Professionals always planned their escape before their attack.

Silence returned slowly.

Broken only by alarms.

And crying.

General Carter leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

Rachel checked every room.

Finally she entered ours.

"Tessa?"

"Are you hurt?"

Tessa shook her head.

"I'm okay."

Then she looked toward the shattered window.

"They know."

"They know the folder survived."

Minutes later...

Crime Scene technicians flooded the ICU.

One investigator approached carrying a recovered radio.

"Sir..."

"We intercepted part of their transmission."

General Carter took the headset.

A distorted male voice played through the speaker.

"Package not recovered..."

"Primary witness still alive..."

Then another voice answered.

One sentence.

Calm.

Emotionless.

"Then activate Judge Holloway."

Every federal agent froze.

Rachel slowly lowered the recorder.

"No..."

General Carter looked toward her.

"You know that name?"

She nodded.

"Judge Michael Holloway."

"The judge assigned to the Mercer case."

The realization struck everyone at once.

If the assassins couldn't destroy the evidence...

they would destroy the trial itself.

At that exact moment...

Rachel's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

Her face turned pale.

"What happened?"

The room fell silent.

She slowly lowered the phone.

"They're too late."

General Carter frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Judge Holloway..."

"...was found dead in his home twenty minutes ago."

No one spoke.

The Black Ledger had already claimed another victim.

And whoever stood behind it had just declared war...

May you like

not only on my family...

but on the entire justice system.
