PART 4: The fire burned for less than forty minutes.

PART 4: The fire burned for less than forty minutes.

It was enough.

By the time firefighters forced their way into Mercer Financial headquarters...

the executive floor had collapsed.

Rows of filing cabinets had melted into twisted steel.

Hard drives had become blackened plastic.

The evidence vault was nothing more than a smoking shell.

Television helicopters circled overhead while reporters called it an electrical accident.

The FBI called it something else.

A professional cleanup.

General Carter watched the live footage without speaking.

Then he picked up the secure phone.

"Activate Sentinel Protocol."

Every agent in the room looked up.

One detective frowned.

"General...that's reserved for national security cases."

"It is now."

Within an hour...

Roadblocks surrounded every Mercer property.

Private airports were locked down.

Ports received federal alerts.

Bank accounts were frozen.

The Mercer family had spent decades believing their influence reached everywhere.

For the first time...

they discovered someone else's reached farther.

Meanwhile...

I sat beside Tessa's hospital bed.

She hadn't slept.

Every time she closed her eyes...

she saw our daughter.

The nursery we had painted together.

The tiny clothes folded inside the dresser.

The heartbeat we would never hear again.

I held her hand in silence.

Finally, she whispered,

"I keep thinking..."

"If I had given them the folder..."

"Our baby might still be alive."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"They didn't attack you because of a folder."

"They attacked you because they believed fear would control you."

"You didn't fail."

"They did."

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

For the first time since I returned home...

she let herself cry.

Late that afternoon...

Special Agent Rachel Monroe from the FBI entered the room carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside...

was a small pink backpack.

Tessa immediately recognized it.

"Lily's backpack."

Rachel nodded.

"It belonged to your niece."

"The six-year-old."

I frowned.

"Why would your father ignore a child's backpack?"

Tessa gave a weak smile.

"Because he never noticed children."

She reached inside the bag.

Removed a faded coloring book.

Then carefully peeled away the cardboard backing.

A hidden compartment.

Inside...

a blue folder.

Exactly where she had hidden it three months earlier.

Everyone in the room stopped breathing.

Rachel carefully opened it.

Page after page.

Financial ledgers.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Signed contracts.

Lists of names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Offshore account numbers.

Every document stamped with the same handwritten title.

BLACK LEDGER

General Carter slowly removed his glasses.

"My God..."

Rachel flipped another page.

Then another.

Each page made her expression darker.

"This isn't local corruption."

"No."

"It isn't even statewide."

She looked at me.

"This reaches Washington."

One photograph slipped onto the hospital blanket.

It showed Harold Mercer shaking hands with a United States senator.

Behind them stood several businessmen.

One face immediately caught my attention.

I had seen him before.

Not in America.

In Afghanistan.

Eight years earlier.

He had been listed as an international contractor supplying humanitarian aid.

Except intelligence believed he was laundering money for criminal organizations.

I looked at General Carter.

"You know him."

The General's face hardened.

"I hoped I was wrong."

"Who is he?"

He answered quietly.

"Victor Soren."

"He finances wars."

"He finances politicians."

"He finances organized crime."

"And according to this folder..."

"He financed Harold Mercer."

The room became deadly quiet.

Rachel closed the folder.

"We can't keep this in hospital evidence."

"They'll come for it."

General Carter nodded.

"They already know it survived."

Almost as if the words summoned danger...

every light inside the ICU suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire floor went dark.

Emergency generators failed to activate.

The steady rhythm of medical machines stopped.

Silence.

Then...

backup alarms began screaming.

Doctors rushed into the hallway.

Nurses shouted orders.

Patients cried out from nearby rooms.

Rachel instinctively reached for her sidearm.

"This wasn't an outage."

General Carter was already moving toward the door.

"No."

"It's coordinated."

A security officer sprinted around the corner.

"General!"

"The hospital surveillance system has been hacked!"

Another officer arrived seconds later.

"Three armed men wearing paramedic uniforms entered through the emergency entrance."

"They're coming to this floor."

My blood turned cold.

Tessa looked at me with terrified eyes.

"They're not here for me."

She glanced toward the blue folder resting on the bed.

"They're here..."

"...to erase the last piece of evidence."

From somewhere beyond the darkened corridor...

came the unmistakable sound of an elevator opening.

Then...

heavy boots.

Calm.

Measured.

Getting closer.

May you like

And whoever stepped out...

already knew exactly which room they were coming for.
