PART 3: The handcuffs had barely clicked shut before Harold Mercer began shouting.

PART 3: The handcuffs had barely clicked shut before Harold Mercer began shouting.

“You can't arrest all of us!”

“This is political!”

“You're doing this because of him!”

His voice echoed through the hospital corridor.

No one answered.

The detectives simply continued escorting the nine men toward the elevators while television crews, somehow already outside, pointed cameras toward the entrance.

For the first time in decades...

The Mercer family could not buy silence.

I remained outside Tessa's ICU room.

General Carter stood quietly beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

War had taught both of us something important.

Some losses deserved silence before words.

Finally, the ICU doors opened.

Dr. Evelyn Ross stepped into the hallway.

"Captain Hayes?"

I stood immediately.

"Your wife is awake."

My heart stopped.

"For how long?"

"Only a few minutes."

"She's asking for you."

Nothing in combat prepared me for walking into that room.

Tessa looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.

The bruises along her face had darkened.

Her left arm rested in a cast.

Bandages covered most of her shoulder.

Yet the first thing she did...

...was try to smile.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I hurried to her bedside.

"No."

I gently took her hand.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Tears rolled slowly down her cheeks.

"The baby..."

My own vision blurred.

"I know."

She closed her eyes.

"I tried to protect her."

"You did."

"They wouldn't stop."

My grip tightened around her hand.

"I know."

She remained silent for nearly a minute.

Then she opened her eyes again.

"Daniel..."

"They weren't trying to scare me."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They wanted something."

"What?"

Her breathing became uneven.

"The folder."

Every instinct I possessed sharpened instantly.

"What folder?"

"The blue folder."

"I hid it."

"Before they found me."

General Carter stepped inside.

"So there was evidence."

Tessa nodded weakly.

"They thought..."

"I gave it to Daniel before deployment."

She looked at me.

"I never did."

I searched my memory.

Every phone call.

Every letter.

Every package.

Nothing.

"I don't understand."

"They searched our house."

"They searched my office."

"They searched my car."

"They never found it."

"Because..."

She smiled faintly despite the pain.

"I hid it where none of them would ever look."

Just then...

A loud voice erupted outside.

"I demand to see my clients!"

A sharply dressed attorney pushed through the officers.

Victor Langford.

The most expensive criminal defense lawyer in the state.

He walked directly toward the detectives.

"My clients are respectable businessmen."

"They'll be released within the hour."

The lead detective smiled.

"I wouldn't promise them that."

Victor frowned.

"You don't have enough evidence."

The detective handed him a tablet.

Victor watched thirty seconds of surveillance footage.

His confidence disappeared.

Then came another video.

Then another.

By the fourth...

...he quietly lowered the screen.

Outside the ICU...

General Carter received a phone call.

He listened without interrupting.

Then looked at me.

"Daniel..."

"The FBI just executed search warrants."

"At every Mercer business."

I stared at him.

"So she was right."

He nodded.

"They've already found offshore accounts."

"Fake charities."

"Construction fraud."

"Bribery payments."

"And this is only the first hour."

Back inside the room...

Tessa squeezed my hand.

"They'll destroy everything."

I leaned closer.

"Not this time."

She looked at me with frightened eyes.

"You don't understand."

"There are people above my father."

"Much higher."

"They funded him."

"They protected him."

"If the folder is found..."

"They'll come after us."

The room fell silent.

Even General Carter's expression hardened.

"Who are they?" he asked quietly.

Tessa hesitated.

Then whispered three words.

"The Black Ledger."

The General's face changed immediately.

"You've seen it?"

She nodded.

"I copied every page."

General Carter slowly exhaled.

Then looked at me.

"If she's telling the truth..."

"This stopped being a state investigation."

"What is it?"

He answered in a voice I had only heard on battlefields.

"The Black Ledger is rumored to contain twenty years of illegal payments."

"Judges."

"Politicians."

"Corporate executives."

"Police officials."

"Organized crime."

"No agency has ever been able to prove it exists."

Tessa looked toward the ceiling.

"It exists."

"I copied it."

"And my father knows I did."

Before anyone could speak again...

Every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.

Mine.

The General's.

The detective's.

Even Dr. Ross's emergency pager.

The detective answered first.

His expression froze.

"What?"

"Repeat that."

The room became silent.

He lowered the phone slowly.

"The Mercer Financial headquarters..."

He swallowed.

"It's on fire."

A second detective burst into the ICU moments later.

"Sir!"

"The evidence vault..."

"It's gone."

Then he looked directly at me.

"And security cameras show someone entered the building..."

"...exactly thirty minutes before the fire."

Tessa's face turned completely pale.

"They found out."

"They're already destroying the evidence."

She gripped my hand with the last of her strength.

"Daniel..."

"The blue folder..."

"It's the only copy they don't know exists."

"And if we don't find it first..."

"Everyone responsible for killing our daughter..."

"...will walk free."
