Truth rises when green water clears.
By late Sunday evening, the colonial house on the outskirts of Raleigh looked like a crime scene straight out of a national news broadcast.
Yellow police tape cordoned off the entire perimeter, media vans crowded the narrow suburban street with satellite dishes pointed at the sky, and forensic tents were erected over the backyard patio.
I sat in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a thermal blanket, holding Maya tightly against my side while a paramedic checked her vital signs and fed her small sips of electrolyte water.
She was safe.
She was breathing.

Across the lawn, specialized police scuba divers in full black wetsuits and oxygen tanks emerged from the deep end of the green swimming pool, hauling heavy, waterlogged contractor trash bags up onto the concrete deck.
I watched through the ambulance doors as the lead investigator carefully sliced open the heavy orange duct tape on the first bag.
