PART 5: The Weight of Hidden Skeletons

PART 5: The Weight of Hidden Skeletons
Desperate criminals reveal their true colors.
Julian realized the game was over in the exact same heartbeat I did.
The polished property manager facade melted away, revealing the cold, cornered predator beneath the designer polo shirt.
He didn't try to argue with me about custody agreements or child psychology anymore.
Instead, his right hand slid slowly toward his back pocket, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
“You shouldn't have looked in the pool, Daniel,” Julian said softly, his voice devoid of all warmth, sounding like a stranger wearing someone else’s skin. “Some secrets are expensive to keep. And people who dig too deep tend to disappear into the very same places they investigate.”
“Julian, stop!” Elena screamed, grabbing his arm with trembling hands. “What are you doing?! You said we were going to move away! You said nobody would ever find out!”
“Shut up, El!” Julian roared, shoving her aside with enough force to send her crashing against the kitchen island.
Before Julian could pull whatever weapon he was reaching for from his pocket, I launched myself across the living room coffee table, tackling him around the waist with the fury of a father whose entire world had been nearly destroyed.
We crashed hard onto the hardwood floor, sending chairs skidding and decorative vases shattering against the walls.
Julian was strong—fit from weekend tennis matches and corporate gym sessions—but I had adrenaline, righteous fury, and the memory of my daughter’s bruised wrists driving every muscle in my body.
I pinned him to the floor, my forearm pressed across his throat as he thrashed and clawed beneath me.
“Where are your keys, you bastard?!” I demanded, pressing harder as he gasped for air. “Who is in the pool? WHO IS IN THE POOL?!”
Before Julian could answer, the front door burst open with a deafening crash of heavy police boots.
“Raleigh Police Department! Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!”
Shouting voices, flashing red and blue lights reflecting through the living room windows, and the cold metal click of handcuffs slamming onto wrists filled the room in a chaotic blur.

It was over.
The nightmare was finally being dragged out into the harsh, unforgiving light of day.
