PART 3: My Husband Watched His Mother Choke Me… Then He Finished the Job

The pounding on the front door grew louder.

"Police! Open the door!"

For the first time since I married into the Carter family, Margaret looked frightened.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Frightened.

Ethan immediately stepped away from me and straightened his jacket as if nothing had happened.

"Help her up," he whispered to his mother.

Margaret grabbed my arm so tightly it hurt.

"Listen carefully," she hissed. "If you say one word about today, we'll tell them you lost your balance. No one will believe a hysterical pregnant woman over the Carter family."

Before I could answer, the front door burst open.

Two uniformed officers entered, followed by a female paramedic.

An elderly housekeeper stood behind them, her hands trembling.

It was Martha.

She had worked for the Carter family for over thirty years.

"I called them," she admitted quietly.

"I heard her screaming."

Margaret's face twisted with rage.

"You stupid old woman..."

Judge-like authority filled the room as Officer Rebecca Collins stepped forward.

"Ma'am, I'd like to speak with Mrs. Carter alone."

Margaret forced a smile.

"Officer, this is all a misunderstanding. My daughter-in-law has been emotional because of the pregnancy."

Ethan nodded.

"My wife has suffered panic attacks before."

I stared at him.

Another lie.

Another betrayal.

Officer Collins noticed the bruises already darkening around my neck.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Can you tell me what happened?"

Before I could answer, Ethan interrupted.

"She fell against the wall."

The officer remained silent.

Then she looked down.

My bare feet were shaking uncontrollably.

A faint bruise circled one wrist where Margaret had grabbed me.

Rebecca had seen injuries like these before.

They didn't come from falling.

She gently led me toward the dining room.

"No one else comes in."

The moment the door closed, she knelt beside me.

"You don't have to protect them."

The kindness in her voice broke something inside me.

For three years I had protected my husband.

Protected his reputation.

Protected his family.

And where had it brought me?

To this moment.

Pregnant.

Bruised.

Terrified.

I whispered only three words.

"They'll take her."

Rebecca frowned.

"Who?"

"My baby."

"They want my daughter."

Tears streamed down my face.

I told her everything.

The divorce papers.

The threats.

The adoption documents.

Margaret calling my unborn daughter "the Carter heir."

Ethan saying I would never raise my own child.

Rebecca's expression changed from concern...

...to determination.

She quietly activated the body camera clipped to her uniform.

Then she asked the question that changed everything.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Do you have any proof?"

My heart sank.

"No."

"I don't."

Or at least...

I thought I didn't.

Just then, Martha knocked softly on the dining-room door.

"I think..."

"...there's something you should see."

Hidden beneath her apron was a small silver flash drive.

"I've kept this for almost a year."

Margaret's face drained of color the moment she saw it.

She knew exactly what was on it.

And suddenly...

Everyone in the mansion realized the real nightmare had only just begun.
