PART 2: My Husband Watched His Mother Choke Me… Then He Finished the Job

The first thing I felt wasn't pain.

It was betrayal.

For three years, I had convinced myself that Ethan Carter was different from the rest of his family.

When we met, he drove an old pickup truck, wore faded jeans, and spent weekends volunteering at a community garden. He never told me he was the only son of the Carter family, one of the wealthiest families in the state.

I grew up on a small farm where hard work mattered more than money. My father repaired tractors. My mother worked double shifts at a diner. We never had much, but we had each other.

When Ethan proposed, I believed love could bridge any distance between our worlds.

His mother never believed that.

Margaret Carter looked me up and down the first day we met.

"So... you're the farmer's daughter."

She smiled politely.

But her eyes carried nothing except contempt.

After the wedding, she reminded me almost daily that I didn't belong.

She criticized the way I spoke.

The way I dressed.

The meals I cooked.

Even the way I held my own husband.

When I became pregnant, I hoped everything would change.

Instead...

It became worse.

Margaret insisted the baby deserved "a proper Carter mother."

I didn't understand what she meant until she placed divorce papers in front of me one rainy afternoon.

"Sign them."

I looked at her in disbelief.

"I'm carrying Ethan's child."

"Exactly," she replied. "The child deserves this family."

"And you don't."

I pushed the papers back across the table.

"I'm not leaving my husband."

Her expression hardened.

"You don't get to decide that."

She stepped closer.

Before I could react, her fingers closed around my throat.

My back slammed against the wall.

I gasped for air.

Instinctively, both hands moved to my swollen belly.

"Please..." I whispered.

"My baby..."

She tightened her grip.

"You should have stayed on your little farm."

Tears blurred my vision.

Every second felt longer than the last.

Then I heard the front door open.

Relief flooded through me.

"Ethan..."

I whispered his name like a prayer.

Margaret immediately released my neck.

I collapsed to my knees, coughing violently.

Footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Ethan appeared in the hallway.

For one beautiful second...

I believed everything was over.

He would see the bruises.

He would protect his wife.

He would protect his daughter.

Instead, he looked at the unsigned divorce papers.

Then at his mother.

"Did she refuse again?"

Margaret nodded.

"She's becoming difficult."

Ethan sighed with quiet disappointment, as though I had inconvenienced him.

He crouched beside me.

I reached for his hand.

He pulled it away.

"You should've listened."

"What... are you talking about?" I gasped.

"Our family attorney already has adoption papers prepared."

The room spun around me.

"What?"

Ethan's face remained cold.

"My daughter will grow up as a Carter."

"But she won't grow up with you."

Every word struck harder than his mother's hands.

I stared at the man I had loved.

The man I trusted.

The father of my unborn child.

I didn't recognize him anymore.

Then he did something I'll never forget.

He placed both hands around my neck.

Not hard enough to kill me.

Just enough to make me understand that he had chosen a side.

And it wasn't mine.

Just as darkness began closing around me...

Someone started pounding violently on the front door.

"Police!"

"Open the door!"

Margaret froze.

Ethan immediately let go.

For the first time that day...

May you like

Fear appeared on both of their faces.

To be continued in Part 3...
