PART 4: The Voice of the Accused

PART 4: The Voice of the Accused

Truth echoes through a crowded room.

I reached up, picked up a heavy cordless microphone from the DJ station, and pressed the power toggle.

A sharp, low hum vibrated through the massive ceiling speakers before my voice boomed across the entire ballroom, commanding instant silence from the ninety stunned guests.

“Thank you all for coming today,” I said, my voice steady, carrying an icy resonance that reached every corner of the hall. “I know you were expecting to witness a joyful union. But unfortunately, I’ve just been made aware of some critical, life-altering information regarding my bride.”

Rebecca let out a choked, strangled gasp, her hands flying to cover her mouth as color drained entirely from her face.

“Daniel, stop this right now! Turn that microphone off!” she screamed, lunging forward like a cornered animal to tackle me away from the equipment.

Before she could close the distance, my brother—acting as Best Man—stepped decisively into her path, raising his hands to block her advance without touching her.

“Back off, Rebecca,” my brother warned, his eyes hardened with disgust. “Let him speak.”

I nodded toward the AV technician stationed behind the laptop console.

“Hit play.”

The massive projector screen overhead flickered to life, bathing the darkened ballroom in a harsh, glaring white light.

The audio file began to play instantly, crystal clear and horrifyingly intimate.

The sound of a brutal, open-handed slap echoed through the grand ballroom like a gunshot, freezing every guest in their seats.

Then, Rebecca’s actual voice—arrogant, venomous, and devoid of any human empathy—flooded the surround-sound speakers.

“By the time Daniel understands, his money will already be mine.”

A collective, collective gasp of shock sucked the air entirely out of the room, turning ninety people into petrified statues of disbelief.

Rebecca’s mother dropped her designer leather purse to the floor, her hands trembling as she stared up at the screen in absolute horror. Her father stood up half an inch out of his folding chair, his face turning a deep, mottled shade of crimson.

The audio recording continued to roll, exposing her cruel mocking of Emily and her calculated plot to isolate me from my family.

“...the successful, put-together woman he's completely obsessed with, or the unstable daughter who can't let go of her dead mother?”

“Turn it off! Please, turn it off!” Rebecca shrieked, falling to her knees on the polished wooden floor as hot tears ruined her professionally applied wedding makeup.

She looked around the room frantically, realizing that every single eye was fixed on her with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

“It’s a fake! She faked the audio! Emily has always hated me and wanted to ruin our lives!”
