PART 4 – The First Step

PART 4 – The First Step

The orchestra conductor slowly lowered his baton.

Without saying a word...

The musicians began playing a soft waltz.

No one had planned it.

It simply felt right.

Evelyn looked at Noah.

"What if I fall?"

The little boy smiled.

"Then..."

"I'll help you up."

Her physical therapist, seated among the guests, quietly stepped forward.

"So will I."

Another therapist joined him.

Then another.

No cameras flashed.

No one applauded.

The ballroom respected the moment.

Slowly...

Evelyn placed both hands on the arms of her wheelchair.

Her body shook.

Years of fear pressed against her shoulders.

She pushed upward.

Nothing.

She took a deep breath.

Noah whispered,

"I believe in you."

One more attempt.

Her knees straightened.

Her legs trembled violently.

Then...

For the first time in almost eight years...

Evelyn stood.

Only for a few seconds.

Supported by her therapists and holding Noah's tiny hand.

But she was standing.

The ballroom erupted into tears instead of cheers.

Because everyone understood...
