PART 3 – The Cardboard Home

PART 3 – The Cardboard Home

Police followed the woman to an abandoned alley two blocks away.

Behind a broken laundromat...

They found what the children called home.

Two flattened cardboard boxes.

A thin blanket soaked by last night's rain.

An old teddy bear with one missing eye.

Nothing else.

No food.

No clothes.

No adults.

Detective Michael Grant searched carefully.

Inside an old backpack...

He found a hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was:

Emily Carter.

The children's mother.

Attached to it was a folded note stained by rain.

If anything happens to me... please don't separate them. My son promised he'd protect his sister.

The detective looked at the tiny boy.

"What's your name?"

"Ben."

"And your sister?"

"Lily."

"You've been taking care of her?"

Ben nodded proudly.

"I sing to her."

"I make her sleep."

"When she gets scared..."

"I tell her Mommy is coming."

The detective couldn't answer.

Because hospital records had already confirmed the heartbreaking truth.

Emily Carter had died three days earlier after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

No next of kin had been located.

No emergency contact existed.

The children didn't know.

They were still waiting for a mother...

...who would never come home.

That evening every local news station carried the story.

Two orphaned toddlers...

Sleeping on cardboard...

Still believing their mother would return.

Millions watched.

One man couldn't stop crying.

Because he recognized the little boy instantly.
