PART 4: The Price of Compassion
The governor arrived less than twenty minutes later.
Instead of speaking to reporters...
He walked straight toward William.
Then...
To everyone's shock...
He removed his jacket.
Sat beside the old man on the hospital floor.
And quietly asked,
"What would you do..."
"...if Emily were your granddaughter?"
William didn't hesitate.
"I'd save her first."
The governor nodded.
"So would I."
He stood.
Turned toward the hospital director.
"In my forty years of public service..."
"I've never witnessed anything more disgraceful."
He ordered an immediate investigation.
Hospital records were opened.
Security footage reviewed.
Within hours...
Investigators discovered dozens of poor families had been turned away despite emergency conditions.
Some children never came back.
The director tried to defend himself.
"It was hospital policy."
The governor answered calmly.
"No."
"It was greed."
The board voted that same evening.
The director was fired.
The admissions supervisor suspended.
The security guard who had humiliated William publicly apologized with tears in his eyes.
Meanwhile...
Emily was finally admitted.
Doctors began treatment immediately.
No deposit.
No paperwork.
No delay.
As William watched nurses wheel his granddaughter toward oncology, he whispered,
"Thank you..."
The young doctor smiled sadly.
"No, Sergeant."
"It's our turn to repay the debt."
Days later...
Emily's condition began improving.
The governor's grandson also stabilized after another compatible donor was located through a national emergency registry.
No child had to be sacrificed to save another.
