PART 5: The Salted Earth

PART 5: The Salted Earth

When a snake loses its venom, it starves.

By Monday morning, the legal and social fallout of Maren’s attempted sabotage had metastasized far beyond the resort grounds.

Adrian and I were sitting on the balcony of our honeymoon suite, drinking coffee and watching the morning waves, when my attorney called.

"Maya," Mr. Vance said through the speakerphone. "We've finalized the civil filings. Maren Blake and Tessa Rowan have been officially served with cease-and-desist orders, along with a formal civil suit for tortious interference, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress."

"What about her employment?" Adrian asked.

"Maren’s firm has already acted," Vance replied. "She was a senior PR consultant for a high-profile agency in Chicago. Once the viral audio reached her managing partners this morning, they issued a public statement terminating her contract immediately. They cited a severe breach of their corporate ethics clause."

I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling a quiet, heavy stillness settle over me.

Maren had spent ten years positioning herself as the brilliant, indispensable socialite who managed everyone else's lives. In less than forty-eight hours, her career, her social circle, and her carefully curated reputation had been reduced to ash.

An hour later, my phone chimed with a text from an unknown number. It was Tessa.

Maya, please, the message read. I am so, so sorry. Maren manipulated me! She told me Adrian was miserable and that you were forcing him into the wedding! I didn't know she was going to try to ruin your dress or steal the rings! Please drop the lawsuit against me, I will testify against her in court!

I stared at the message for three seconds.

Tessa hadn't been a passive bystander. She had laughed through the wall at 1:13 a.m. She had helped brainstorm ways to destroy my gown. She was only sorry now because the consequences had arrived at her door.

I forwarded the text message directly to my lawyer, blocked the number, and laid the phone face down on the outdoor table.

"Are you okay?" Adrian asked gently, placing his hand over mine.

"I’m better than okay," I said, looking out at the endless expanse of the ocean. "For years, I thought Maren was keeping me grounded. I thought I needed her approval to feel secure."

"And now?"

"Now I realize she wasn't holding me up," I smiled, squeezing my husband's hand. "She was holding me down so I wouldn't see how high I could stand without her."

May you like

Adrian smiled, leaning over to kiss my lips.

The salt air was sweet, the sun was bright, and the ghosts of our past were officially buried beneath the waves.
