Part 5: A ghost from the past returns!

Part 5: A ghost from the past returns!
The world seemed to stop moving. The rain drumming against the tall glass windows, the hum of the grand chandelier lights, Ethan’s protective arm around her waist—everything blurred into an agonizing blur for Clara.
"My father died seven years ago..." Clara’s voice was a fragile whisper, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold the phone against her ear. "I buried him, Sarah! I stood by his grave in the pouring rain! How can his name be on a flight manifest?!"
"Clara, listen to me carefully," Sarah’s voice rang through the speaker, firm and grounded despite her own initial shock. "In the corporate world of high-level shadow syndicates, dead men come back to life all the time when three hundred million dollars are on the line. We need to verify if this is an identity hijack or... something far worse."
Ethan took the phone gently from Clara’s trembling hand, putting his arm around her shoulders to support her weight.
"Sarah, this is Ethan," he said into the mic, his eyes burning with protective fury. "Where is that helicopter landing right now?"
"The private helipad on top of the Vanguard Tower downtown," Sarah replied instantly. "My SWAT-backed security detail is already en route. But Ethan, if the man stepping off that chopper has your father-in-law’s face, legal authority over those ports becomes a nightmare."
"We're coming to Vanguard Tower," Ethan declared, stepping toward the door with Clara in his arms.
"Ethan, no!" Clara sobbed, clutching his jacket collar. "I can't... I don't know if I can face this. What if my entire life was a lie? What if the father I loved was behind all of this suffering?"
Ethan knelt beside her, cupping her cheeks in his hands, looking deep into her tear-filled eyes. "Sweetheart, look at me. Your father loved you. The man who raised you taught you kindness, humility, and grace. Whatever monster is landing at Vanguard Tower tonight, we will face it together. I won't let anyone hurt you or our baby ever again."
Clara took a deep, shuddering breath, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. Courage, long buried under months of Victoria's abuse, flickered back to life in her eyes. She nodded firmly.
Twenty minutes later, three heavy black SUVs tore through the neon-lit, rain-soaked streets of the financial district, their tires screeching as they screeched to a halt outside Vanguard Tower.
Dozens of armed security officers flanked the glass entrance. Above them, the whirring blades of a heavy twin-engine helicopter echoed off the surrounding skyscrapers as it touched down on the rooftop pad.
Sarah Montgomery was already waiting in the lobby, dressed in a sharp black coat, flanked by Chief Henderson and a dozen federal agents.
When Sarah saw Clara walk through the revolving doors—supported by Ethan, her pregnant belly clear under her coat—Sarah stepped forward, her eyes filled with genuine respect.
"Clara," Sarah said softly, taking her cold hand for the first time. "You are stronger than they give you credit for."
"Let's end this, Sarah," Clara replied, her voice steady and resolute.
The group crammed into the private high-speed elevator, the digital floor indicator rapidly climbing toward the 50th-floor penthouse helipad. Nobody spoke. The tension inside the elevator was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Ding.
The elevator doors slid open to the howling wind and rain of the rooftop.
In the center of the lit helipad, the private helicopter’s rotors were slowly winding down. Standing in front of the aircraft, flanked by four heavy guards in black suits, was an elderly man holding a silver walking cane. He wore a tailored dark cashmere coat, his silver hair neatly slicked back against the rain.
As the floodlights hit his face, Clara gasped, her knees nearly giving out.
The facial structure, the sharp jawline, the piercing gray eyes—it was identical to the framed photographs Clara had kept on her nightstand for seven long years.
"Father...?" Clara cried out, her voice torn between heartbreak and disbelief.
The silver-haired man slowly turned his head. A cold, calculating smile spread across his face—a smile devoid of any warmth, completely alien to the loving father Clara remembered.
"Hello, Clara," the man spoke, his voice deep, raspy, and devoid of affection. "You've grown up. And I see you've married a Sterling."
"You..." Ethan stepped in front of Clara, shielding her with his body as Marcus and the federal agents drew their sidearms, pointing them directly at the guards. "Who the hell are you?"
Chief Henderson stepped forward with a megaphone. "Arthur Vance! Drop your cane and put your hands behind your head! You are surrounded by federal officers!"
The silver-haired man let out a low, mocking laugh that echoed over the wind.
"Arthur Vance?" the man sneered, adjusting his leather gloves. "Is that what you think, Chief? That I am Arthur Vance—the weak, soft-hearted fool who let his own brother steal his company and ran away to play dead?"
Clara stepped out from behind Ethan, tears streaming down her face as the rain soaked her hair. "If you aren't my father... then who are you?!"
The man reached up to his neck, pressing a small silver button behind his ear. With a sickening click, a thin, ultra-realistic silicone prosthetic mask loosened along his jawline. He pulled it away in one swift motion, throwing it onto the wet tarmac.
Underneath the mask was a face scarred by deep burns—a face that Sarah Montgomery recognized instantly from her family’s private intelligence archives.
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. "Julian's father... Donald Vance!"
"Donald..." Ethan’s eyes widened in shock. "The twin brother who was supposed to have perished in the harbor explosion thirty years ago!"
"I didn't perish," Donald spat, his eyes burning with decades of unadulterated hatred. "I survived in the shadows, building Vanguard Holdings from the ashes of your father's betrayal, Sarah! Arthur was too weak to take back what was ours, so I took his identity, forged his death, and waited until his penniless little girl grew up!"
Donald pointed his silver cane directly at Clara's pregnant belly, his face twisting into a demonic grin.
"And now, with Arthur’s fake signature on the international transfer, the Vance Maritime Trust belongs entirely to Vanguard," Donald declared triumphantly. "And there is not a single court in this country that can stop me!"
"You're wrong, Donald," Sarah said calmly, stepping forward alongside Arthur Sterling, who pulled a stamped red folder from his leather briefcase.
Donald’s smile faltered. "What is that?"
"It’s a court order signed thirty minutes ago by the Supreme Chief Justice," Sarah revealed, holding the document high into the pouring rain. "A post-mortem DNA verification warrant. We exhumed Arthur Vance's real grave two hours ago. The DNA locked inside that coffin proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Arthur Vance died of natural heart failure seven years ago."
Donald’s face turned ghastly pale. "No... no, that's impossible!"
"Which means every single document you signed using Arthur’s name over the last seven years is a federal felony offense of grand identity theft and fraud," Sarah declared coldly. "Your entire syndicate is dead in the water, Donald."
"Traitor!" Donald screamed, raising his silver cane—which clicked open to reveal a hidden, high-caliber firearm pointed straight at Sarah's chest!
BANG!

A deafening gunshot echoed through the stormy night air.
Clara screamed, closing her eyes as a body collapsed heavily onto the wet tarmac.
