Part 4 – The Ledger That Could Destroy an Empire

Part 4 – The Ledger That Could Destroy an Empire

For several endless seconds...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Amelia stared at Barrett as memories she had buried beneath six years of fear suddenly flooded back with terrifying clarity.

Her mother's trembling hands.

The smell of smoke.

The sound of breaking glass.

A tiny silver key pressed into her palm.

"Never tell anyone."

"Not even if they threaten your life."

"If you ever remember... find the music box."

Music box.

Her eyes widened.

"Oh my God..."

She whispered so softly only Kendrick heard her.

"The music box..."

Kendrick turned toward her.

"You remember?"

Amelia slowly nodded.

"My mother didn't hide the Crimson Ledger."

"She hid the key."

Barrett's smile disappeared.

"What did you say?"

Amelia looked straight at him.

"The ledger isn't where you searched."

"It never was."

Barrett's expression darkened instantly.

"You little liar."

"I've torn apart every Sterling property."

"I've searched every vault."

"Every warehouse."

"Every account."

"You expect me to believe a child outsmarted me?"

Amelia's voice became stronger.

"No."

"My mother did."

Silence.

Barrett suddenly laughed.

A long...

Cold...

Unsettling laugh.

"You really are Eleanor Sterling's daughter."

"Stubborn until the very end."

He slowly removed a pistol from beneath his jacket.

Gasps erupted throughout the ballroom.

Several guests screamed.

Guards immediately raised their weapons.

Titan exploded to his feet.

His terrifying growl shook the entire room.

Barrett pointed the gun directly at Amelia.

"If you won't tell me..."

"You'll die exactly like your parents."

Before anyone could react—

Bang!

The shot echoed through the ballroom.

But Amelia didn't fall.

Kendrick had stepped in front of her.

The bullet tore through his shoulder.

Blood instantly soaked the sleeve of his black suit.

Penny screamed.

"Daddy!"

Titan launched forward with a roar that sounded almost inhuman.

Barrett fired again.

This time...

Titan reached him first.

The massive mastiff slammed Barrett onto the marble floor with enough force to crack the tiles beneath them.

The gun skidded across the ballroom.

Barrett screamed as Titan's enormous jaws stopped barely an inch from his throat.

He didn't bite.

He waited.

For Kendrick's command.

Kendrick pressed one hand against his bleeding shoulder.

His voice remained frighteningly calm.

"Don't."

Titan froze instantly.

Still pinning Barrett beneath nearly one hundred fifty pounds of muscle.

Guests stood paralyzed.

No one had ever seen Barrett helpless.

The man who had controlled syndicate politics for twenty-five years...

Now couldn't even breathe without Titan allowing it.

Security finally rushed forward.

Barrett was handcuffed.

Still laughing.

Still smiling.

"You think you've won?"

He looked directly at Kendrick.

"Ask your father's old accountant."

"Ask why he disappeared."

"Ask who really ordered the Sterling murders."

Kendrick's eyes narrowed.

"What are you talking about?"

Barrett leaned closer.

"I didn't betray your father."

"I saved him."

Those words hit harder than the gunshots.

Before Kendrick could ask another question—

One elderly man stepped out from the crowd.

Everyone recognized him.

Edgar Holloway.

Former financial adviser to both the Ashford Syndicate...

And the Sterling Corporation.

No one had seen him in nearly ten years.

His hands trembled violently.

"I..."

He swallowed.

"I can't stay silent anymore."

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Edgar slowly removed an old leather envelope from inside his coat.

Yellowed.

Worn.

Sealed with red wax.

"I kept this because I knew..."

"...one day someone would survive."

He handed it to Amelia.

"It's addressed to you."

She stared at the handwriting.

Her mother's handwriting.

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

With trembling fingers...

She broke the seal.

Inside rested only three things.

A faded photograph.

A tiny silver key.

And a handwritten letter.

She unfolded it carefully.

The first sentence made her knees weaken.

My dearest Amelia...

If you're reading this... then both your father and I are gone.

Tears blurred the page.

Everyone waited.

She forced herself to continue.

The Ashfords did NOT kill us.

The ballroom exploded into shocked whispers.

Kendrick looked up.

Barrett's smile slowly disappeared.

Amelia continued reading.

We trusted the wrong partner.

His name is Barrett Collins.

Barrett's face lost all color.

For the first time that night...

He looked afraid.

The letter continued.

He convinced both our families to distrust one another.

He forged financial records...

Created false evidence...

Started a war that never needed to happen.

Amelia's hands shook harder.

She looked directly at Barrett.

"My parents never hated the Ashfords..."

"They trusted them."

Edgar slowly nodded.

"They were building something together."

"The largest legal shipping alliance in the country."

"Barrett wanted it for himself."

Kendrick stared at Barrett with quiet disbelief.

"You manipulated both families..."

"For thirty years?"

Barrett slowly closed his eyes.

Then...

He smiled again.

"Not just both families."

He looked around the ballroom.

"I manipulated every one of you."

Several syndicate leaders exchanged horrified glances.

Because deep inside...

They already knew.

If Barrett truly controlled both sides...

Then nearly every bloody conflict of the past three decades...

Had been built on lies.

And somewhere...

Hidden behind the tiny silver key now resting in Amelia's hand...

Was the Crimson Ledger.

The one document capable of proving every crime Barrett had committed...

Against both families.
