The Mafia Boss Refused to Pick a Woman—Until His Dog Lay Down at a Poor Waitress's Feet

The Mafia Boss Refused to Pick a Woman—Until His Dog Lay Down at a Poor Waitress's Feet

"Make your choice."

Barrett's command echoed across the magnificent ballroom on the eighty-eighth floor.

Crystal chandeliers bathed the hall in golden light, illuminating fifteen impeccably dressed young women standing shoulder to shoulder. Draped in silk gowns, adorned with diamonds, and carrying the elegance expected of Manhattan's most influential underworld families, each of them waited silently for one man's decision.

None dared breathe too loudly.

All eyes were fixed on Kendrick Ashford.

The undisputed ruler of the East Coast syndicate sat in an oversized leather chair, expression unreadable. His long fingers tapped lazily against the armrest, each measured beat revealing just how little interest he had in the ceremony unfolding before him.

He never even glanced at the women.

Before he could reject the entire spectacle, something enormous stirred beside him.

Titan stood.

The one-hundred-fifty-pound Neapolitan Mastiff unfolded from the floor like an ancient guardian awakening. Layers of gray skin covered his massive frame, while his amber eyes slowly swept across the room.

Several women instinctively stepped backward.

No one wanted the dog's attention.

Titan began walking.

Each heavy step echoed across the marble floor with unsettling authority.

Clinging tightly to his collar was Penny, Kendrick's five-year-old daughter, hurrying after him with tiny footsteps.

Instead of approaching the elegant women lined before the stage, Titan ignored every one of them.

He headed toward the darkest corner of the ballroom.

There, almost hidden against the wall, stood a young waitress in a simple black uniform.

She tried to make herself invisible.

An empty silver serving tray trembled in her hands while her heartbeat thundered inside her chest.

Titan stopped directly before her.

The terrifying dog who had reduced hardened gangsters to silence slowly lowered himself onto the polished floor.

Then...

His tail began to wag.

No one in the room had ever witnessed that before.

Willa blinked in confusion.

Carefully, she reached out and rested her fingertips on the wrinkled top of his broad head.

"Titan... what's gotten into you?"

The mastiff answered with nothing more than a soft whine before gently placing his enormous head against her feet.

At that moment, Penny lifted her face.

The little girl's pale gray eyes met Willa's.

Neither spoke.

For one impossible moment, the crowded ballroom disappeared.

Only those two gazes remained.

Then Penny quietly raised one finger.

"I want her, Daddy."

Her innocent voice carried effortlessly through the silent hall.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered across the marble, breaking the spell that had frozen everyone in place.

Kendrick slowly rose from his chair.

Until now, he had looked completely indifferent.

Now his attention rested solely on the trembling waitress standing in the corner.

And to everyone's surprise...

She looked back.

She didn't lower her head.

She didn't avoid his gaze.

If anyone had looked closely, they might have wondered why the little girl—who hadn't willingly spoken to anyone for three years—had suddenly chosen a complete stranger.

The silence stretched tighter with every passing second.

Then Barrett exploded.

He strode forward, his carefully maintained smile vanishing beneath naked fury.

His face darkened with anger as he thrust a shaking finger toward Willa.

"This is unacceptable!"

"She manipulated the child."

"She has disgraced tonight's ceremony."

Turning toward the nearest security guards, Barrett barked his orders without hesitation.

"Get that waitress out of here."

"Bring the manager."

"I want to know who allowed someone like her to work during the syndicate's most important event."

Whispers immediately spread among the guests.

Several of the elegantly dressed women stared at Willa with open disdain.

One woman dressed in crimson laughed behind her hand.

"Look at her uniform."

"It's stained."

"Someone like that should know her place."

Titan never moved.

He remained lying calmly beside Willa.

Yet a deep growl slowly rolled from his chest.

Quiet.

Steady.

Warning.

The two approaching bodyguards instinctively slowed their pace.

The thick fur along Titan's spine rose.

His lips curled just enough to reveal rows of powerful teeth.

His amber eyes never left the men.

Penny quietly stepped behind Willa, clutching the edge of her uniform.

The little girl remained silent, but she watched Barrett with unusual caution, as though sensing something invisible to everyone else.

The guards stopped only a few steps away.

Unsure.

Waiting.

Barrett expected them to obey.

Instead, another voice reached them first.

Cold.

Calm.

Absolute.

"If anyone touches that girl..."

Kendrick paused.

"...or my dog..."

"...they'll regret how they leave this building."

He never raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

The temperature inside the ballroom seemed to drop instantly.

Both guards froze where they stood.

Barrett spun around.

"You can't possibly be serious!"

"She's only a waitress!"

"The women standing here are daughters of the most powerful families—"

He stopped.

Kendrick had merely looked at him.

Nothing more.

Yet that single icy glance erased the rest of Barrett's protest before it could leave his mouth.

Silence settled over the ballroom once again.

Kendrick descended the staircase at an unhurried pace.

The guests instinctively moved aside without being asked.

He walked past every elegantly dressed heiress.

Past Barrett.

Past glittering chandeliers and untouched champagne glasses.

Finally, he stopped in front of Willa.

The contrast couldn't have been greater.

One wore a flawless custom-made black suit.

The other stood in a wrinkled waitress uniform marked with small stains from a night's work.

Kendrick first looked at Penny, who still refused to release Willa's hand.

Then at Titan, whose tail continued wagging with quiet contentment.

Finally, he met Willa's eyes.

"Who are you?"

His voice revealed nothing.

Willa swallowed.

Her throat felt painfully dry.

"I'm... nobody, sir."

A brief silence followed.

Kendrick studied her face with quiet curiosity.

She was frightened.

Her hands trembled.

Yet she refused to lower her eyes.

Everyone avoided looking directly at him.

Politicians.

Crime bosses.

Even the daughters of powerful families.

This ordinary waitress did not.

Without another word, Kendrick turned toward Barrett.

"She stays."

Only two words.

Yet they carried the weight of an unquestionable verdict.

Barrett opened his mouth, but no sound came.

The decision had already been made.

Kendrick gently rested a hand on Penny's head before leaving the ballroom with his daughter and Titan.

The discussion was over.

Willa remained standing where she was.

Around her, countless hostile stares burned into her back.

She couldn't tell whether fate had just opened the gates of heaven...

Or invited her into hell.

Later, Willa was escorted to a private suite at the far end of the eighty-eighth floor.

The room was breathtaking.

Every piece of furniture spoke of unimaginable wealth.

Even working her entire life, she doubted she could ever afford a single chair inside.

Yet none of that impressed her.

To Willa, it felt like a beautifully decorated prison.

She sat stiffly on a gray velvet sofa, hands folded neatly in her lap, waiting as though judgment were about to be passed.

Looking down at her trembling fingers, she struggled to steady her breathing.

For six years she had hidden from the world.

She had abandoned her real identity.

Changed her appearance.

Changed her name.

Even learned to behave like someone else.

And now...

In a single evening...

She had somehow found herself sitting at the very heart of the Ashford Syndicate—the very organization responsible for destroying everything she had once loved.

Part 2 – The Waitress Who Knew Too Much

The suite remained silent long after the heavy oak door closed.

Willa didn't touch the tea waiting on the table.

Didn't admire the priceless paintings.

Didn't even sit comfortably.

Every instinct she had spent six years developing screamed the same warning.

Run.

Before they recognize you.

Before it's too late.

Across from her, Kendrick Ashford stood beside the panoramic window overlooking Manhattan.

He hadn't spoken for nearly two minutes.

Neither had she.

Titan quietly rested beside Willa's feet.

The giant mastiff refused to leave her side.

Every few seconds his tail gently tapped the marble floor.

Penny sat cross-legged beside him.

For three years...

The little girl had barely spoken.

Doctors called it trauma-induced selective mutism.

Psychologists blamed witnessing her mother's murder.

Yet tonight...

She had spoken first.

Not to Kendrick.

Not to Barrett.

Not to any therapist.

Only to Willa.

"I want her."

Those four words still echoed inside Kendrick's mind.

Finally...

He broke the silence.

"Titan doesn't trust strangers."

Willa nodded carefully.

"I can see that."

"He has bitten six men."

"I believe you."

"He has never willingly approached anyone outside my family."

She looked down at Titan.

The enormous dog had fallen asleep against her shoes.

Almost like...

He had known her forever.

"I don't understand it either," she whispered.

Neither did Kendrick.

But something bothered him far more than Titan's behavior.

He had been watching Willa since she entered the suite.

Most people trembled under his gaze.

Some cried.

Others begged.

Willa was afraid...

But not of him.

She was afraid of something else.

Someone else.

"You've worked here long?"

"Eight months."

"Before that?"

"A diner in Brooklyn."

"And before that?"

She hesitated.

"My records were destroyed in a fire."

It was the first lie.

Kendrick noticed immediately.

He simply chose not to expose it.

Not yet.

Before another question could follow...

A knock interrupted them.

Barrett entered without waiting.

His smile had returned.

But his eyes burned with quiet hatred.

"Boss..."

"I've arranged transportation for the young ladies."

"They're leaving."

"Excellent."

Barrett glanced toward Willa.

"And her?"

"She stays."

Barrett's jaw tightened.

"For how long?"

Kendrick looked at Penny.

"As long as my daughter wants."

Barrett forced another smile.

"Of course."

Then he left.

But before the door completely closed...

Willa noticed something.

Barrett quietly looked toward one of the guards.

Barely noticeable.

A tiny hand signal.

The guard immediately disappeared down the hallway.

She had seen that signal before.

Six years ago.

The exact same signal...

Moments before her father's convoy had been ambushed.

Her heartbeat nearly stopped.

Impossible.

It couldn't be.

Unless...

Barrett had been connected all along.

Later that night...

Unable to sleep...

Willa quietly wandered toward the kitchen searching for water.

The mansion seemed endless.

Empty.

Almost peaceful.

Until voices drifted from a partially opened study.

She recognized Barrett immediately.

"...she knows something."

Another voice answered.

"I've already checked."

"She disappeared six years ago."

"Changed her identity."

"But if she's really Amelia..."

Barrett interrupted.

"Then she can't stay alive."

Willa froze.

Her blood turned to ice.

Amelia.

Her real name.

No one had spoken it in six years.

No one...

Except the men who murdered her family.

A floorboard creaked beneath her foot.

Inside the study...

Silence.

Then Barrett spoke softly.

"Someone's outside."

The door swung open.

Willa ran.

She didn't think.

Didn't look back.

Only ran through unfamiliar hallways.

Behind her...

Footsteps exploded across polished marble.

Two guards.

Then four.

Someone shouted,

"Stop her!"

She turned a corner—

—and slammed directly into Kendrick Ashford.

He caught her before she fell.

She was shaking so violently she could barely breathe.

"They..."

"They know..."

Before she could finish—

Gunshots shattered the silence.

Three deafening blasts echoed through the mansion.

Every chandelier trembled.

Titan exploded forward with a terrifying roar.

Security flooded the corridor.

Kendrick instinctively pulled Penny behind him.

Smoke drifted from the opposite hallway.

One guard collapsed onto the marble floor.

Another screamed into his radio.

"Boss!"

"There's an assassin inside the mansion!"

Kendrick slowly looked down at Willa.

She hadn't screamed.

She hadn't panicked.

Instead...

She stared directly toward the shooter.

And quietly whispered...

"No..."

"They're not here for you."

Every person in that hallway fell silent.

Then she looked Kendrick straight in the eyes.

May you like

"They came..."

"...for me."
