Part 5: The Ledger Named Every Traitor

Part 5: The Ledger Named Every Traitor

The black notebook disappeared back into Alessandro's jacket.

No threats.

No shouting.

Just ink on paper.

For the men and women who had served the Moretti family for decades, that silence was far more terrifying than any outburst.

Linda Foster's knees nearly gave way.

"Boss... please," she whispered. "It wasn't what you think."

Alessandro looked at her without expression.

"Then tell me what I should think."

She opened her mouth, but no words came.

Carl Jensen lowered his head.

"We were told not to interfere."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Told by whom?"

Neither answered.

That hesitation told him everything.

Someone higher up had been giving orders.

Someone who believed they could hide the truth from the head of the Moretti family.

Behind them, Dr. Bell stepped out of the cottage.

"Sophia's fever is beginning to come down."

Alessandro nodded once.

"Will she recover?"

"If she stays here, maybe."

The doctor glanced toward the old employee cottage.

"But honestly..."

He hesitated.

"She belongs in a hospital."

"I've arranged an ambulance."

Emma looked frightened.

"Mama leave me?"

Alessandro crouched beside her.

"No."

"You'll go with her."

The little girl wrapped both arms around his neck.

"And you?"

The question caught him off guard.

"I'll come too."

For the first time since he'd found her in the laundry room...

Emma smiled.

An hour later, Sophia regained consciousness.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

The first thing she saw was Emma sleeping peacefully beside her hospital bed.

The second...

Was Alessandro sitting quietly in the corner.

She tried to sit up.

"No..."

Panic flooded her face.

"I'm sorry."

"I should've called."

"I just needed a few days."

"I didn't want to lose my job."

Alessandro stood.

"You thought I would fire you because you got sick?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I've seen it happen before."

"My last employer replaced me after pneumonia."

"I couldn't let Emma lose another home."

Those words struck harder than any bullet ever had.

She had spent three years working inside his organization...

And still believed she was disposable.

Later that evening, Alessandro ordered Victor to bring every employment record from the past five years.

Boxes filled the library.

Payroll files.

Medical leave requests.

Staff evaluations.

Security reports.

He reviewed them himself.

By midnight, a disturbing pattern emerged.

Every employee who became seriously ill...

Eventually resigned.

Every resignation cited "personal reasons."

Every exit interview had been approved...

By the same department.

Human Resources Director...

Linda Foster.

Alessandro leaned back slowly.

Too many coincidences.

Not coincidence.

System.

Someone had quietly forced vulnerable employees out while making it appear voluntary.

But why?

The answer arrived just after sunrise.

Marco DeLuca, the family's longtime accountant, entered the library carrying another stack of files.

"You asked for payroll comparisons."

Alessandro accepted them.

Five minutes later...

He stopped reading.

Medical leave funds.

Employee assistance grants.

Emergency housing budgets.

Millions of dollars.

Approved every year.

Yet almost none of it had reached the employees.

He looked up.

"Where did the money go?"

Marco swallowed hard.

"I've been trying to figure that out."

He slid one final folder across the desk.

"The signatures authorizing those transfers..."

"They weren't yours."

Alessandro opened the folder.

His own signature appeared on dozens of documents.

Perfect.

Identical.

Completely fake.

Someone had forged his name...

For years.

Before Alessandro could respond, his chief of security rushed into the room.

"Boss."

"We've got a problem."

"What now?"

"The surveillance team reviewed footage from the employee cottages."

He placed a tablet on the desk.

The video began playing.

It showed Sophia collapsing outside her cottage two nights earlier.

She could barely stand.

She reached for the emergency call box installed on every employee residence.

Then...

A man stepped into frame.

He unplugged the emergency phone.

Looked around.

And calmly walked away.

Alessandro froze.

He recognized him instantly.

Not a stranger.

Not an outsider.

One of his most trusted senior managers.

The man responsible for overseeing every employee on the estate.

Someone who had worked beside him for eleven years.

Someone Alessandro had once called family.

May you like

And as the video continued to play, another figure quietly emerged from the shadows...

Watching everything happen without lifting a single finger to help.
