PART 7 — The Gala That Changed Everything

PART 7 — The Gala That Changed Everything

The ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers and polished marble.

Boston's wealthiest families filled the room in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns, sipping champagne beneath banners celebrating the Castellano Children's Foundation.

The irony wasn't lost on Dominic.

A charity dedicated to protecting children...

Built by a family that had abandoned one of its own.

He stepped through the entrance precisely at seven o'clock.

Conversations stopped.

Not because he was late.

Because he never attended these events anymore.

Marco walked one step behind him.

Arthur followed quietly.

And beside Dominic—

wearing clean clothes for the first time in months—

walked Marcus.

The little boy looked overwhelmed by the enormous ballroom.

He instinctively reached for Dominic's hand.

Dominic didn't hesitate.

He held it.

Across the room, Vincent Castellano noticed them.

At first he smiled.

Then he saw the child.

The smile disappeared.

His wineglass paused halfway to his lips.

Marco leaned closer.

"He recognizes him."

Dominic answered softly.

"I know."

Vincent crossed the ballroom with practiced confidence.

"Brother."

His smile returned.

Convincing.

Warm.

Completely false.

"I wasn't expecting to see you tonight."

Dominic smiled back just enough.

"I thought it was time."

Vincent glanced toward Marcus.

"And who's this?"

Marcus politely answered before anyone else could.

"I'm Marcus."

Vincent's eyes froze for the briefest fraction of a second.

"So..."

he said carefully,

"...whose son are you?"

Marcus looked toward Dominic.

Then smiled.

"I think..."

"...I'm his."

The color drained from Vincent's face.

Only for an instant.

Years of deception had taught him how to recover quickly.

He laughed lightly.

"What an imagination."

Dominic watched every tiny reaction.

Every blink.

Every breath.

Every muscle tightening beneath Vincent's expensive tuxedo.

Exactly the way he had once studied enemy commanders overseas.

Only now...

the battlefield belonged to family.

An announcer stepped onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"Please welcome Mr. Dominic Castellano."

Applause filled the ballroom.

Dominic slowly walked toward the podium.

Marcus remained beside Arthur.

Vincent relaxed slightly.

He believed the danger had passed.

He was wrong.

Dominic stood before hundreds of guests.

Business leaders.

Judges.

Politicians.

Charity donors.

Television cameras.

He looked across the room before speaking.

"My family has spent decades building a reputation."

Polite applause followed.

He raised one hand.

"It was built on loyalty."

Silence returned.

"Tonight..."

"I learned that loyalty means nothing without truth."

People exchanged uncertain glances.

Vincent shifted uncomfortably.

Dominic continued.

"This afternoon..."

"...a seven-year-old homeless boy returned my wallet."

Soft murmurs spread across the audience.

"He could have taken every dollar inside."

"He owned nothing."

"He was hungry."

"He was alone."

"But he chose honesty."

Marcus lowered his eyes shyly as hundreds of strangers turned toward him.

Dominic looked directly at the child.

"I owe that boy my life."

The audience applauded warmly.

Vincent forced himself to clap.

Dominic waited.

Then quietly added—

"Because he is my son."

The ballroom exploded into stunned silence.

Champagne glasses stopped halfway to mouths.

A violinist lowered her bow.

Even the photographers forgot to press their shutters.

Vincent stared at Dominic in disbelief.

Arthur placed a reassuring hand on Marcus's shoulder.

Dominic spoke again.

"Seven years ago..."

"Someone made sure Clara Bennett disappeared."

A ripple of whispers spread through the crowd.

"And someone made sure I never knew my son existed."

Vincent's breathing became uneven.

Marco discreetly handed Dominic a small remote.

Dominic pressed one button.

Behind him...

The enormous projection screen came alive.

Black-and-white surveillance footage filled the ballroom.

Warehouse.

SUVs.

A newborn wrapped in blue.

Then—

Vincent himself.

The audience gasped.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The recording continued.

Vincent accepted the infant.

Passed him to the fake nurse.

And said clearly—

"Make sure Castellano never finds them."

Complete silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Vincent's face turned completely white.

"This..."

he stammered.

"...this is fabricated."

Dominic looked at him calmly.

"Is it?"

Marco stepped forward carrying another folder.

"The video has already been authenticated by independent forensic analysts."

"The original investigator's files have also been secured."

Arthur added quietly,

"And copies were delivered to federal authorities this afternoon."

Vincent stumbled backward.

"You planned this."

Dominic shook his head.

"No."

"You planned this..."

"...seven years ago."

Security officers slowly moved toward Vincent.

He looked around desperately.

Searching for allies.

None came.

Not one.

Because truth had finally entered a room built on appearances.

Just as the guards reached him—

Vincent suddenly laughed.

A cold.

Broken laugh.

"You still don't understand."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"What don't I understand?"

Vincent smiled through trembling lips.

"I wasn't protecting myself."

"I was protecting you."

The ballroom froze again.

Dominic stared at his brother.

"What did you just say?"

Vincent slowly raised his hands.

"You think I was the mastermind."

He looked almost relieved now.

"I wasn't."

He glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

"They're already here."

Every security officer instinctively reached for their radios.

Then—

The massive oak doors swung open.

An elderly man entered surrounded by six armed federal agents.

Every color drained from Dominic's face.

May you like

He whispered a name he hadn't spoken in over twenty years.

"...Father."
