PART 5 — The Truth Was Buried Alive

PART 5 — The Truth Was Buried Alive

No one spoke.

The letter remained in Dominic Castellano's trembling hands while the office stood frozen around him.

Marco had worked beside Dominic for fifteen years.

He had seen him survive ambushes.

He had watched him negotiate with men who smiled while ordering executions.

He had watched him bury friends without shedding a tear.

He had never seen this.

"Boss..."

Dominic slowly folded Clara's note.

"Bring in whoever just arrived."

Marco nodded once.

Thirty seconds later, the office doors opened.

An elderly man stepped inside carrying a thick brown envelope.

Silver hair.

Wire-rimmed glasses.

Dark wool overcoat.

Dominic recognized him immediately.

"Arthur."

Arthur Bennett removed his hat.

"I wasn't sure you'd agree to see me."

Marcus looked between them.

"You know him?"

Arthur's tired eyes settled on the little boy.

Then they filled with tears.

"My God..."

He whispered.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Marcus smiled politely.

"Were you her friend?"

Arthur swallowed.

"I was her father."

Silence crashed across the room.

Marcus blinked.

"My grandpa?"

Arthur nodded, unable to speak.

The boy stared for several seconds before taking one uncertain step forward.

"My mama said you lived far away."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"No."

"I lived five miles away."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Marcus frowned.

"Then... why didn't you come?"

Arthur's shoulders collapsed.

"Because I thought you were dead."

Every person in the room stiffened.

Dominic's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Explain."

Arthur placed the envelope onto Dominic's desk.

"I've carried this for seven years."

Dominic opened it.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Letters.

Police reports.

And one newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

LOCAL WOMAN AND INFANT REPORTED MISSING AFTER APARTMENT FIRE.

Dominic looked up sharply.

"I never saw this."

"You weren't supposed to."

Arthur nodded.

"Neither was I."

He pulled out another document.

"The fire wasn't an accident."

Marco stepped closer.

"What are you saying?"

Arthur answered without hesitation.

"Someone wanted Clara to disappear."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Arthur looked directly into his eyes.

"Someone inside your organization."

The temperature inside the office seemed to fall.

Marco instinctively reached toward his jacket.

Dominic never moved.

Arthur continued.

"Clara came to me six weeks before Marcus was born."

"She was terrified."

"She said someone close to you had discovered she was pregnant."

Dominic whispered,

"Who?"

"She didn't know."

"Only that the man said a child would make you weak."

Marcus quietly took Dominic's hand.

Neither of them seemed to notice.

Arthur continued speaking.

"Clara refused your money."

"She refused protection."

"She believed disappearing would keep both of you alive."

Dominic closed his eyes.

"She should have told me."

Arthur nodded sadly.

"I said the same thing."

"What did she say?"

Arthur smiled through tears.

"'Dominic would burn the city down looking for us.'"

The old man laughed bitterly.

"She wasn't wrong."

Marco carefully turned another page inside the file.

His face changed instantly.

"Boss..."

Dominic looked up.

Marco silently handed him a photograph.

It showed Clara leaving a grocery store while holding newborn Marcus.

Across the street...

A black sedan.

Two men watching her.

The picture had a date stamp.

Seven years ago.

Three months before she vanished.

Marco spoke quietly.

"She wasn't hiding."

"She was being hunted."

Dominic felt rage beginning to replace grief.

"Who took this?"

Arthur answered.

"A private investigator."

"I hired him after Clara stopped answering my calls."

"What happened to him?"

"He disappeared."

The room became deathly still.

Arthur reached into the envelope once more.

"There is one final item."

A small flash drive.

"I couldn't open it."

"The investigator mailed it to me two days before he vanished."

Dominic accepted it.

"What does it contain?"

Arthur shook his head.

"I don't know."

"But the note attached said..."

He unfolded a yellowing card.

"...If anything happens to me, this video identifies the man responsible."

Marco immediately connected the drive to a secure laptop.

The loading screen appeared.

Then static.

A timestamp.

Night vision footage.

A warehouse parking lot.

Several black SUVs.

Marcus looked confused.

"What is that?"

Nobody answered.

The image sharpened.

A familiar man stepped out of one vehicle.

Marco's face turned white.

Dominic slowly stood.

"No..."

The figure turned toward the camera.

Even from several yards away...

There was no mistaking him.

Marco whispered,

"Boss..."

"...that's your brother."

The video continued.

And before anyone could process the betrayal—

May you like

another figure emerged from the shadows...

holding baby Marcus in his arms.
