PART 6: Reunion in the ICU

PART 6: Reunion in the ICU
Recovering admirals salute lost tactical comrades.
Two hours later, after Rear Admiral Nathan Cole successfully emerged from emergency surgery with a stable heart and a clean bill of health, I was escorted by Commander Sterling into the private ICU recovery suite on the fourth floor.
The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft green glow of the heart monitor and the amber streetlights filtering through the blinds outside.
Nathan sat propped up against hospital pillows, pale and bruised, but with a clarity in his eyes that hadn't been there when he first rolled through the ER doors.
The three girls stood quietly near the foot of the bed, watching like guardian angels.
As I pushed the door open and stepped inside, Nathan turned his head.
Our eyes locked across the sterile room.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
The fourteen years of ghost towns, civilian nursing scrubs, lost identities, and bureaucratic erasure vanished into thin air.
"You're late for extraction, Captain," Nathan finally said, a slow, tired smile spreading across his weathered face.
I let out a watery laugh, walking over to the side of the bed and resting my hand gently over his knuckles—the exact same grip he had used to pull me out of the mud so many years ago.
"Traffic was hell, Admiral," I replied, my voice thick with emotion.
Nathan squeezed my hand back, his grip strong and warm.
"You saved my life twice now, Mara," he murmured, looking around the room at his daughters. "And you gave these girls their father back."
"We saved each other, Nathan," I corrected softly.
Commander Sterling stood quietly by the doorway, holding a sealed manila folder stamped with high-level Pentagon security seals.
"For the record, Captain Ellis," Sterling announced formally, offering a crisp, crisp military salute, "your active-duty status has been officially reinstated, and your classified MIA file is being unsealed by order of the Joint Chiefs."
I looked at the salute, then down at Nathan, and finally at the three girls who were smiling proudly beside the bed.
