The nurse’s hub fell into a silence so profound you could hear the distant hum of the vending machines down the hall.
Commander Sterling stared at me, his mouth opening slightly as the pieces of a puzzle he had spent a decade trying to solve suddenly clicked into place.
"Captain Mara Ellis..." Sterling whispered, reading the name off my badge as if seeing it for the first time. "The Air Force forward air controller reported MIA during the 2012 Euphrates extraction... administrative records were sealed under Executive Order 1402."
"My plane went down after painting the target coordinates for Nathan’s extraction team," I said quietly, the memories flooding back through the dam of fourteen years of silence. "I spent two months in a rebel prison camp before being rescued by an unacknowledged cross-border unit. When I came home, my unit was gone, my records were classified, and the military told me I didn't exist anymore."
I looked down at the three girls who had just broken down every emotional wall I had spent six years building in this hospital.
"When Nathan's chopper went down in that ravine fourteen years ago," I continued, my voice trembling, "he was the officer in charge who stayed behind to coordinate my extraction when the brass tried to write us off. We kept each other alive for twelve hours under enemy fire."
Chloe stepped closer, wrapping her arms around my waist and burying her face in my shoulder, sobbing quietly.
"Dad talked about you every single night," Chloe muffled against my uniform. "He kept your dog tags in his desk drawer. He said you were the bravest soldier he ever flew with."
