PART 3 – The Will Nobody Expected

PART 3 – The Will Nobody Expected
The attorney slowly unfolded Richard Sterling's final will.
The room became so quiet that even the heart monitor sounded deafening.
Marcus folded his arms.
"This won't change anything."
"I'm his only son."
The attorney looked at Richard.
"Mr. Sterling asked me to read one paragraph before anything else."
Richard nodded weakly.
The attorney began.
"To my son Marcus..."
"I gave you every advantage money could buy."
"But I failed to teach you the value of people."
Marcus' jaw tightened.
The attorney continued.
"To Daniel..."
He looked toward the frightened boy.
"...the great-grandson I should have known long ago..."
"I cannot give you back the family you lost."
"But I refuse to let you lose your future as well."
Gasps filled the room.
Richard had established the Eleanor Family Trust.
The trust would pay for Daniel's home...
His education...
His healthcare...
And everything he would ever need until adulthood.
But that wasn't all.
The attorney opened another envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
"This company was built because I abandoned the woman I loved."
"I will not allow it to remain a monument to that mistake."
Richard announced that twenty percent of Sterling Industries' annual profits would permanently fund scholarships for children who had lost both parents.
The board members stared in disbelief.
Marcus finally exploded.
"This is insanity!"
"He's manipulating you!"
Richard slowly turned toward him.
May you like
"No..."
"I've been manipulated for sixty years."
