Part 4 - The wreckage of an illusion.
News of Ethan and Madison’s arrests traveled through the city’s corporate circles like wildfire. By 3:00 PM, the headlines on every major financial news outlet read: “Vance Foundation Scandal: CEO and CFO Arrested for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Medical Falsification.”
I sat in the high-floor conference room of my former company’s headquarters, watching the sun beam down over the Manhattan skyline. Across the long glass table sat the remaining board members—the very same men who, a year ago, had voted to remove me after Ethan presented his fabricated narrative of my "unstable mental state."
They looked terrified.
"Claire," the interim board chairman stammered, his fingers trembling as he adjusted his tie. "We... we had no idea. Ethan lied to all of us. He presented altered audit reports, and Madison backed up every single word."
"You chose to believe them because it was convenient," I said quietly, my voice carrying a stillness that made every man in the room shrink back. "You didn't check the originals. You didn't ask questions. You pushed out the founder who built this firm from a garage because a man with a nice suit told you I was emotional."
"We are prepared to offer a full public apology and reinstate you as CEO immediately," another board member chimed in nervously. "With full voting control restored."
"The reinstatement is non-negotiable," Adrian stepped forward from the doorway, placing a thick legal dossier onto the glass table with a heavy thud. "And as part of the formal restitution agreement negotiated with the District Attorney, fifty-one percent of Ethan's liquidated personal shares will be transferred directly to Claire by the end of the business day."
The board members exchanged panicked glances, but not a single one dared to object. They signed the emergency resolution on the spot.
Leaving the boardroom, Adrian and I walked down to the lower level of the building, where the legal team was assisting federal marshals in clearing out Ethan and Madison’s offices.
Boxes of seized documents, luxury items purchased with stolen foundation funds, and designer clothes lined the hallway. Outside Ethan's corner office, his assistant stood in tears, while two officers packed his mahogany desk.
Suddenly, a commotion near the elevator bank caught our attention.
A middle-aged man in a sharp suit was arguing with two police officers. As I walked closer, I recognized him immediately: David Sterling, a high-profile real estate developer and one of the foundation's largest donor partners over the past three years.
"I need to speak with the lead investigator!" Sterling demanded, his face red with anger. "That woman lied to me!"
"Mr. Sterling?" I called out, stepping between the officers. "What's going on?"
Sterling turned to me, his expression shifting from anger to deep embarrassment. "Claire... I'm so sorry. I just heard what happened at the hospital."
He swallowed hard, looking toward the police officers holding a box of Madison's personal belongings. "Six months ago, Madison came to me asking for a private cash loan of $500,000. She claimed it was for an urgent medical procedure for the baby. She promised to pay it back using her foundation bonuses."
I narrowed my eyes slightly. "And who did she say the biological father was?"
Sterling pulled a folded paper from his jacket pocket, handing it to me with shaking hands. "She told me... she told me the baby was mine. We had a brief affair right before she married Ethan. She used a fake paternity test to blackmail me into funding her offshore accounts."
A cold, ironic laugh nearly escaped my lips.
Madison hadn't just deceived Ethan; she had orchestrated a web of lies so vast and chaotic that it collapsed under its own weight the moment one thread was pulled. She had played Ethan against me, Sterling against Ethan, and used a innocent child as her ultimate leverage tool.
My phone rang in my coat pocket. It was the District Attorney's office.
"Claire," the prosecutor's voice was sharp and direct. "Ethan Vance's defense team is asking for a emergency bail hearing. But his lawyer just dropped a bombshell... Ethan is claiming that you were the one who authorized the offshore transfers three years ago using a digital signature."

I smiled softly into the receiver, looking out at the city streets below.
"Tell his lawyer," I replied calmly, "that I have the original hard-copy server logs from the night the transfers were made—stamped with Ethan's private IP address and signed in Madison's handwriting."
