Part 3 - Lies crumble like dust.

Part 3 - Lies crumble like dust.
The words hung in the sterile hospital air, heavy and suffocation-thick, as Ethan stood entirely frozen.
The color drained from his face so fast it looked like he had been struck. His jaw worked silently, trying and failing to form words, his arrogant posture collapsing into rigid disbelief. Beside him, Madison stumbled backward against the wall, clutching the boy so tightly the baby began to whimper in confusion.
"What... what did you just say?" Ethan’s voice barely rose above a rasping whisper. He stared at Dr. Adrian Vale, then swung his wild, bloodshot eyes toward Madison. "He's lying. He's working with Claire to mess with my head!"
"The DNA profile was cross-referenced three times in the state forensic database," Adrian replied calmly, tapping the official blue seal stamped on the document. "It's a one hundred percent match for zero biological relation between you and the child. Your severe fertility factor was completely permanent, Ethan. You were never going to father a child without donor assistance—something you hid from both of these women."
Ethan lunged toward Madison, his hand grabbing her arm so hard she cried out in pain. "Whose baby is this?! Who have you been sleeping with?!"
"Ethan, stop! You're hurting me!" Madison shrieked, backing away as milk from the spilled bottle soaked into the hem of her expensive dress. "I was desperate! You were so obsessed with proving Claire was the problem! You told me if I couldn't give you a son right away, you'd go back to her or find someone else! I couldn't lose you!"
"So you lied to me?!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the linoleum tiles and drawing gasps from the nurses hovering at the station down the hall. "I gave you my foundation! I gave you Claire's house! I spent the last year bragging to the entire city about my son!"
"You didn't give her anything, Ethan," I interrupted softly, stepping into his line of sight with my arms folded across my chest. "You stole those assets from me. And now, every single cent of it is being frozen by court order."
As if on cue, the two security officers who had been waiting at the end of the hall walked up, flanked by two plainclothes detectives from the financial crimes unit.
The lead detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Ethan Vance? Madison Reed? You are both under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of medical records in connection with the corporate embezzlement of Vance Foundation funds."
"This is insane! You can't arrest me in a hospital!" Ethan shouted, stepping back in panic, but the officers easily seized his arms, forcing his hands behind his back. The sharp clack of the metal cuffs locking around his wrists sounded like the final gavel falling on his stolen life.
Madison broke down into hysterical sobs, sinking to her knees as an officer gently took the child into protective care until family services arrived. "Claire, please!" she begged, looking up at me through smudged mascara. "I'll give the money back! I'll tell them everything! Just don't let them take me to jail!"
I looked down at the woman who had spent years sitting at my kitchen table, drinking my tea, and plotting my ruin while pretending to pray for my fertility.
"You told me to leave with dignity, Madison," I said, my voice ice cold as I stepped past her on the slick floor. "Now it's your turn to leave without it."
Ethan struggled against the officers' grip as they led him toward the elevators, his face twisted in rage and humiliation. "You think you won, Claire?! You're still alone! You still have nothing!"
I stopped and looked back at him one last time. A calm, genuine smile spread across my face—a smile he had never managed to break.
"I have my truth, my name, and my freedom, Ethan," I said softly as the elevator doors began to slide shut. "And starting today, you have nothing at all."
Beside me, Adrian slid the sealed envelope into his coat pocket and looked at me with a soft, respectful smile. "Where to now, Claire?"

I adjusted my coat, took a deep breath of the fresh morning air coming from the hospital lobby, and walked out into the sunshine.
"To reclaim my company."
