Part 6: The fall of an empire.

Part 6: The fall of an empire.

Marcus rattled the door handle frantically, his suave, confident demeanor completely disintegrating into panicked desperation. "David! Let me out! We can talk about this! I can give you back the assets! I’ll sign everything over to Maya!"

"It’s too late for deals, Marcus," I said, stepping forward beside my father. "The police searched your Mercedes an hour ago. They found the registration papers for the hitmen's truck in your glove compartment, along with three hundred thousand dollars in unregistered bearer bonds."

Marcus pressed his back against the locked door, sweating profusely through his three-thousand-dollar suit. "You don't understand... Veronica forced my hand! She threatened to expose my tax evasions to the IRS if I didn't help her get the trust fund!"

"Save it for the judge," David said with absolute finality.

The double doors clicked open, and four state troopers stepped into the room, followed by the District Attorney.

"Marcus Sterling," the District Attorney announced, holding up a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate embezzlement, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. You are being held without bail."

As the troopers forced Marcus to his knees and snapped the handcuffs around his wrists, the man who had spent two decades pretending to be my father's loyal brother began to sob like a coward. He blubbered apologies, begging David to look at him, but my father simply turned his back, looking out the massive glass windows at the city skyline below.

"Take him away," David ordered quietly.

Within an hour, Harrison Enterprises issued an official press release. Marcus Sterling and Veronica Harrison were stripped of all corporate titles, their assets frozen by federal order, and their names dragged into the national spotlight as the criminal conspirators they were.

That evening, my father and I stood in the quiet study of our home. The house felt different now—lighter, cleaner, as if a toxic fog had finally lifted from every hallway.

David walked over to the grand fireplace, holding a framed photograph of Veronica that used to sit on his desk. Without saying a word, he tossed it into the roaring flames, watching the canvas curl and turn into black ash.

He turned to me, his eyes full of a quiet, unshakeable strength. "From this day on, Maya... this family is built on truth. Nothing else."
