PART 6: Unlocking the Past

PART 6: Unlocking the Past
Yellowed legal papers expose corporate murders.
Alejandro carefully unfolded the topmost document, holding it under the beam of the tactical flashlight while I knelt down beside him to read the faded ink.
It was an original property deed for the entire Maple Street block, signed by Richard Vance and countersigned by three municipal officials who had mysteriously resigned from office twenty years ago.
Beneath it lay a detailed financial audit outlining illegal eminent domain seizures, forced evictions, and millions of dollars funneled through dummy shell corporations to silence local homeowners who refused to sell.
And right there, clipped to the back of the file, was my mother’s handwritten journal entry dated two days before she disappeared.
“Richard Vance knows I found the audit trail. He threatened Mariana at her elementary school bus stop today. If anything happens to me, the master copies are locked in the bank safety deposit box under code 77-B.”
I covered my mouth with my hand, a sob catching in my throat as the final, brutal piece of the puzzle fell violently into place.
My mother hadn't abandoned us.
She had gone into hiding to protect me.
She had sacrificed her entire life, her sanity, and her identity just to keep a ten-year-old girl safe from a ruthless billionaire who viewed human lives as collateral damage.
"There's a key taped to the back of the envelope," Alejandro whispered, holding up a small brass key labeled First National Bank - Box 77-B.
He looked over at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Your mother kept the master copies safe," Alejandro said softly. "The bank vault is still active. I checked the corporate registry this morning; my father kept paying the annual lease fee on that box until the day he died."

I wiped the tears from my cheeks, standing up tall with a newfound strength that felt like armor.
"Then let's go get it," I declared, my voice steady and unyielding. "We’re going to the bank."
