PART 3: The Millionaire’s Sudden Terror

PART 3: The Millionaire’s Sudden Terror
Calculated wealth hides terrifying past secrets.
Alejandro staggered half a step backward, his broad shoulders tensing as if he had just walked into the crosshairs of a loaded sniper rifle.
For four years, I had known him as a self-made billionaire tech investor, a man whose cold, analytical mind could dismantle any corporate merger or financial threat in a matter of hours.
I had never seen him look terrified.
Until this exact second.
"Alejandro... what is wrong with you?" I demanded, standing up slowly from the floor, my voice trembling with a cocktail of shock and rising suspicion. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Alejandro didn't answer right away.
His dark eyes flicked from my face to Lucy, who had instinctively shrunk back into the warm water, wrapping her arms around her chest as she sensed the sudden surge of tension in the room.
"Where..." Alejandro choked out, his throat working hard as he forced the words past his teeth. "Where did you find her, Mariana?"
"You brought her here!" I snapped, my protective instincts flaring up like wildfire. "You found her at the downtown soup kitchen! Why are you asking me that? You acted like she was just a random charity case!"
"She wasn't random," Alejandro whispered, running a trembling hand through his dark hair, his professional composure completely shattered.
"What do you mean she wasn't random?!" I shouted, the panic finally breaking through my voice. "Talk to me, Alejandro! What aren't you telling me?"
Alejandro looked down at the floor, taking a slow, shaky breath before lifting his gaze to meet mine with a look of absolute, unmitigated dread.
"When I was twenty years old," Alejandro began, his voice barely audible over the hum of the bathroom vent, "my father’s real estate firm managed the purchase of the old Sterling estate on Maple Street. The house your family abandoned the night your mother disappeared."
My knees wobbled.
"My father didn't just buy a property, Mariana," Alejandro continued, his eyes heavy with guilt. "He bought a silent partnership in a massive zoning fraud scheme. And your mother... your mother found the ledger containing every single signature and bribe."
Lucy let out a sharp cry from the tub, clutching her head again as fragments of memory violently tore through her consciousness.
"The lockbox," Lucy whimpered, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. "The papers... I took pictures of the papers. And then someone pushed me down the basement stairs."
Secrets Beneath the Floorboards
Hidden metal lockboxes store deadly conspiracies.
The bathroom felt smaller, the walls closing in as the two decades of lies, grief, and false hope suddenly unraveled into a web of corporate corruption and cold-blooded violence.
"You knew," I whispered, staring at my millionaire husband as if he were a complete stranger. "When you met me at that charity gala five years ago... when you courted me, married me, and brought me into this house... you already knew who I was."
"No, Mariana, I swear to God, no," Alejandro pleaded, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively. "I didn't know you were Lucile Bennett's daughter until two years into our marriage when I found your childhood photo album locked in the attic storage. By then... I loved you too much to risk losing you by telling you the truth."
"Truth about what?!" I screamed, the rage finally overtaking the terror. "That your family profited off my mother's disappearance? That my mother spent twenty years living on freezing streets while the men who tried to kill her built an empire?!"
"Your father didn't kill her," Lucy interrupted from the tub, her voice uncharacteristically firm, cutting through our argument like a blade of ice.
Alejandro and I both froze, turning our heads toward her in unison.
Lucy wiped the soapy water from her eyes, staring blankly at the marble wall ahead of her as a horrific memory played out behind her gaze.
"It wasn't your father, Mariana," Lucy whispered, her breath hitching. "It was the man in the grey suit. The business partner. He caught me in the study with the lockbox. He told me if I ever said a word about the offshore accounts, he would make sure my daughter disappeared next."
"Who?" Alejandro demanded, taking a step closer to the tub. "Who was the partner, Lucy? Tell me a name."
Lucy’s eyes drifted toward Alejandro, narrowing slightly as she studied his sharp jawline, the shape of his nose, and the intense gaze he shared with his own bloodline.
"Vance," Lucy whispered, her voice trembling. "Richard Vance."
Alejandro staggered backward as if he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe.
Richard Vance.
My billionaire husband’s late father.
The man whose portrait hung proudly in the grand entryway of this very mansion, honored as a pioneering philanthropist and master real estate visionary.
The man who had supposedly died of a heart attack a decade ago, taking every dark secret of his real estate empire with him to the grave.
Except he hadn't taken everything.

He had left my mother broken, amnesiac, and wandering the streets of Chicago.
And now, destiny had dragged her right back to the doorstep of the son who inherited the bloody keys to the kingdom.
