The calm river flows forever.
Five years after Chloe’s wedding, the quiet certainty of my life remained as solid and unyielding as granite.
At thirty-four, my work with the foundation had helped over five thousand single mothers regain their financial independence and protect their children. Lily was nine now—a bright, fearless girl with her father’s intelligent grey eyes and a heart full of boundless warmth.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Lily and I sat together in the sunroom of our home.
She was working on a school art project, carefully painting a large canvas with watercolors. On her desk sat a small, laminated newspaper clipping from five years ago—the article detailing the launch of our foundation.
"Mom?" Lily asked softly, dipping her brush into clean water.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Do you ever get sad about what happened at Aunt Chloe’s wedding?"
I set my book down and walked over to her desk, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as we looked out at the peaceful gardens outside.
"No, Lily," I answered gently. "I used to think that water was something that washed things away. But that night, the water didn't destroy us. It just showed us who was strong enough to stand up in it."
Lily smiled, dipping her brush into a bright golden paint, and pressed a radiant sun onto the center of her canvas.
"Dad stood up with us," she said proudly.
"Yes, he did," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "And we’ll never have to fall again."
In the distance, the front doors of the estate opened, and Alexander’s warm voice echoed through the hallway as he returned home, calling out our names.
Lily ran out of the room to greet him, her bright laughter filling the spacious, sunlit halls of our home.
