PART 5: The True Foundation

Love is the only fortune that lasts.

One year after the night at the fountain, our life was settled, whole, and completely at peace.

At thirty, my life was no longer defined by the shadows of my past or the toxic expectations of a family that never valued me. Together with Alexander, we established the Sterling Child Advocacy Foundation, an endowment dedicated to providing legal defense, emergency housing, and educational grants for single mothers and neglected children across the country.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in September, we hosted a small fourth-birthday party for Lily in the sunlit gardens of our estate.

The lawn was filled with bright yellow balloons, the scent of fresh pastries, and the joyful laughter of twenty children from Lily's pre-school class.

I stood on the stone patio wearing a yellow linen dress, holding a glass of iced tea, watching Lily run through the grass with her friends.

Alexander walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Sterling?" he murmured, kissing the side of my neck.

"I was thinking about Table 19," I smiled, leaning back against his chest. "I was thinking about how terrified I was to bring Lily to that wedding."

Alexander squeezed me tighter, his hands warm and protective over mine. "You never have to sit in the back corner again, Nora. You built this table."

"No," I corrected him, turning in his arms to look into his piercing grey eyes. "We built it together."
