Part 5 — The Woman in the Nurse's Uniform

Part 5 — The Woman in the Nurse's Uniform

The hospital hallway became a blur.

I didn't remember dropping my phone.

I didn't remember running.

I only remembered one thought pounding through my head.

Harper.

Nolan reached the pediatric floor before I did.

The nurses were already searching every room.

Parents stood in the hallway clutching their children.

Security alarms echoed through the building.

Hospital staff shouted directions into their radios.

But Harper...

Was gone.

The nurse assigned to Harper's room was crying.

"I only stepped away for two minutes."

"Someone from Pediatrics said they were taking her for another CT scan."

Detective Hale arrived seconds later.

"Who authorized it?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had.

Hospital security immediately reviewed the surveillance system.

Camera 14.

Pediatric hallway.

Time stamp:

9:17 A.M.

A woman wearing navy-blue hospital scrubs pushed Harper's wheelchair down the corridor.

Harper looked sleepy.

Confused.

She trusted the woman completely.

Why wouldn't she?

She looked exactly like every other nurse.

The woman kept her head down.

A surgical mask covered half her face.

A cap hid her hair.

But as she turned toward the elevator...

The camera caught her left wrist.

A silver charm bracelet.

Tiny butterflies.

My breathing stopped.

I knew that bracelet.

I'd bought it for Sabrina on her thirtieth birthday.

"Zoom in," Nolan said.

The technician enlarged the image.

There it was.

One butterfly charm was missing.

Exactly like the bracelet I'd given her years ago.

Detective Hale slammed his hand against the desk.

"It's her."

Another camera showed the fake nurse leaving through the employee parking garage.

Only...

She wasn't alone.

Someone was waiting inside a black SUV.

The driver's face wasn't visible.

But the license plate was.

Nolan stared at the screen.

"I know that vehicle."

Detective Hale looked at him.

"How?"

"It's registered..."

He swallowed.

"...to our family company."

My father arrived moments later.

He took one look at the footage.

Then covered his face.

"Oh, God..."

"The company security fleet."

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Sabrina still has access."

Officer Alvarez's radio suddenly crackled.

"We've located the SUV."

Everyone froze.

"Where?"

"Highway 41."

"It just crossed the county line."

Every available patrol unit joined the pursuit.

Nolan climbed into Detective Hale's unmarked vehicle.

I followed behind in another police SUV.

No one tried to stop me.

They knew.

I wasn't staying behind.

The chase lasted fourteen minutes.

Then...

Everything changed.

The SUV suddenly swerved off the highway.

Straight into an abandoned warehouse district.

Police surrounded the building within seconds.

Weapons drawn.

"Police!"

"Come out with your hands up!"

Silence.

Then...

A little girl's voice.

"Daddy?"

My entire body froze.

It was Harper.

Nolan didn't wait.

He burst through the warehouse doors.

Inside...

Rows of abandoned shelves stretched into darkness.

At the far end...

Harper sat tied to a chair.

Her unicorn backpack lay beside her.

She wasn't alone.

Sabrina stood behind her.

One arm wrapped tightly around Harper.

The other held a syringe.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was falling loose.

She no longer looked polished.

She looked desperate.

"Don't come any closer!" she screamed.

Everyone stopped.

Harper looked up.

"Daddy..."

Nolan's voice shook for the first time since this nightmare began.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

"I'm here."

Sabrina laughed.

A strange...

Broken laugh.

"You always chose them."

"You never saw me."

She looked at me.

"Everything was supposed to be mine."

"The company."

"The trust."

"The family."

"You ruined everything."

I stared at her.

"No, Sabrina."

"You did."

Her grip tightened around Harper.

The syringe trembled.

"If I can't have it..."

Nobody breathed.

Then Harper did something no adult expected.

She looked up at Sabrina...

And quietly asked,

"Aunt Sabrina..."

"Why don't you love me anymore?"

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Sabrina's hand began to shake uncontrollably.

One tear rolled down her face.

Just enough.

For Nolan to see his chance.

He moved.

Faster than thought.

Faster than fear.

One second...

Harper was trapped.

The next...

She was in Nolan's arms.

The syringe clattered across the concrete floor.

Detective Hale tackled Sabrina before she could take another step.

As officers handcuffed her, she kept staring at me.

Still unable to understand why her perfect plan had failed.

I held Harper so tightly she laughed through her tears.

"Mommy..."

"I knew you'd find me."

And in that moment...

May you like

For the first time since her birthday party...

I knew she was finally safe.
