Part 3 — The Person Harper Called "Aunt"

Part 3 — The Person Harper Called "Aunt"
The doctor's words echoed inside my head.
"If she had taken just two more sips... she wouldn't have survived."
The world around me seemed to disappear.
Machines beeped behind the ICU doors.
Parents whispered in the waiting room.
Someone cried quietly down the hallway.
None of it reached me.
I could only picture Harper smiling...
Holding that little unicorn cup...
Completely trusting every adult in the room.
Including my sister.
Officer Alvarez carefully sealed the evidence bag.
"We're sending the tablet to the state crime lab immediately."
She looked directly at Nolan.
"I also need the prescription bottle recovered from your laundry room."
Nolan nodded.
"It's exactly where she hid it."
The officer made another note.
"Good."
"Because if the fingerprints match..."
She didn't finish.
She didn't have to.
Just then...
Nolan's phone rang.
It was Detective Marcus Hale.
"We've searched the house."
"We found the bottle."
"And..."
He paused.
"There was something else."
Nolan frowned.
"What?"
"A folder."
"Hidden behind the detergent."
Thirty minutes later...
We were sitting inside a small consultation room at the hospital.
Detective Hale laid a thick manila folder on the table.
Across the front...
Someone had written my name.
CAMILLE HARRIS
Below it...
Another word.
UNSTABLE
My stomach turned.
The detective slowly opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Medical articles about postpartum depression.
Printed webpages about bipolar disorder.
Handwritten notes.
Photographs of me crying after Harper was born.
Copies of text messages taken completely out of context.
Even screenshots from my social media.
Every page painted the same picture.
A woman slowly losing her mind.
A mother becoming dangerous.
"This wasn't made recently," Detective Hale said quietly.
"We found invoices."
"Some of these documents are almost eighteen months old."
My hands began shaking.
"Eighteen..."
I whispered.
"She started building this before the trust meeting."
The detective nodded.
"It appears so."
Then he placed another document on top.
It wasn't about me.
It was about Harper.
A draft petition.
Emergency Custody Request.
Reason:
"Mother demonstrates emotional instability placing child at medical risk."
My heart stopped.
This had never been about one birthday.
It had been planned.
For months.
Maybe years.
Nolan slowly read every page.
His jaw tightened with each one.
Finally...
He looked up.
"She intended to poison Harper..."
"...just enough..."
"...to convince everyone Camille couldn't protect her."
Detective Hale answered softly.
"That's exactly what it looks like."
The room became silent.
Until my phone vibrated.
Dad.
Calling again.
For the tenth time.
I almost ignored it.
Then Detective Hale said,
"You should answer."
"It'll be recorded."
I pressed speaker.
"Dad?"
His breathing was uneven.
"Camille..."
"I didn't know."
His voice cracked.
"I swear to God..."
"I didn't know what Sabrina was planning."
I closed my eyes.
"But you saw her."
Silence.
Long enough to become its own answer.
Finally...
"I saw her carrying Harper's cup."
"I thought..."
"I thought she was adding more lemonade."
I felt something inside me break.
Not because he lied.
Because I believed he believed that.
For twenty years...
He had trained himself to explain away everything Sabrina did.
Even when the truth stood right in front of him.
Then his voice dropped.
"There was something else."
My eyes opened.
"What?"
"I found Sabrina's office key after everyone left."
"I went inside tonight."
Another pause.
"There are more files."
My pulse quickened.
"What kind of files?"
"They're about you."
"And Harper."
"And..."
His voice almost disappeared.
"...Nolan."
The room froze.
Detective Hale slowly reached for his notebook.
"What about Nolan?"
Dad whispered,
"She's been investigating him for months."
My husband frowned.
"Investigating me?"
Dad took a shaky breath.
"I found surveillance photos."
"Your work schedule."
"Copies of your payroll."
"Insurance information."
"And one handwritten sentence..."
He stopped speaking.
"Dad?"
When he finally answered...
His voice was barely audible.
May you like
It chilled every person in the room.
"It says..."
